28 T THE SUNDAY STAR. WASHINGTON, BORIS T0 MARRY [TALIAN PRINCESS Giovanna Will Find Model Husband and Dull Social Life in Sofia. | By the Associated Press SOFIA, Bulgaria, March 16— King Boris of Bulgaria, the world's only bachelor sovercign, apparently has made macie up his mind to marry He is even now on a Rome as an important stop, and an- nouncement of his engagement to Prin- cess Glovanna, pretty daughter of King Victor Emmanuel, confidently is pre- dicted in court circles before his return here. The wedding will take place in Sofia, these forecasts assert, some time ti Spring_in connection with the celebra- tion of Bulgaria’s fiftieth anniversary of independence from Turkish ru ‘tour,” with Princess Is 21. ! Boris is just past 30 and Giovanna is 21. A mecmber of the house of Savoy, ske is a Roman Catholic. Although baptized a Catholic, Boris, whose mother was the beautiful and pious French princess, Marie Louise of Bour- bon-Parma, later became a_member of the Orthodox Church of Bulgaria at the instance of his godfaher, Czar Nicholas II of Russia. For allowing his son thus to secede from the Roman Catholic Church, for- mer Czar Ferdinand of Bulgaria was excommunicated by the Pope. On a recent visit to Rome, however, Ferdi- nand was received at the Vatican, and the Pope reinstated him in the Catholic Church. As kings go nowadays, Boris is rela- tively a poor man. (His salary is only $43,000 a year, and he gives half of it to charity.) However, he will be able to give Giovanna not only a part of his throne, but half a do: palaces in different parts of Bulgaria. It is un- derstood the Bulgarian government will give the King a substantial increase in his civil list to enable him to keep Giovanna in a style suited to the dig- nity ard taste of a queen. Zoo Goes With Dowry. As a part of her dowry, Giovanna also will receive from Boris a full- fledged menagerie of elephants, lions, tigers, buffaloes and other animals, a well as the finest and largest collection of butterflies and rare insects in Europe, several huge conservatories of flowers, A narrow guage railroad (which en- circles the palace grounds in Vrania, near Sofia), several American auto- | mobiles, and such crown jewels as Boris was able to save out of the post-| armistice wreckage of his country when Czar Ferdinand, his father, fled abroad. Giovanna will find in Boris a Kin whose intellectual qualities and versa- tility are far above those of the average | monarch, Boris not only knows all about ruling a country, but is a first- class engineer, zoologist, botanist, Bibli- ophile, and a great authority on natural He also is a brilliant linguist, speaking French, Germar, Russian Bulgarian, Turkish, English, Italian and Albanian. More than that, his majesty is some- thing of a genius in mechanical mat- ters. He is a licensed locomotive en- gineer and chauffeur, and has a passion | for the construction and operation of mechanical contrivances of all sort He can take an automobile, sewing ms chine, radio set, machine gun, or the finest’ jewelad watch entirely apart and put it together again with absolute pre- cision his study at the royal pal- ace is a superb silver and steel model of a famous American locomotive which was presented to him on his birthday by Charles R. He may b seen any driving his own automobile through tho streets of Sofia. or roaming the coun- tryside cl @ with peasants abo their home problems. He repeatedly has stranded motorists along the road. When Princess Glovanna comes to Sofia to share the fortunes of King Boris, she will find life in the Bulgarian capital totally different from the gay interesting coefal _activities of 1°. For Sofia is known as one of the gloomiest and dullesf cities in Eu- rope. especially since the World War left the little Slav kingdom prostrate and bankrupt Giovanna will find that her roval spouse dislikes social functions and all forms of elaborate state or court cere- montals. Boris seldom entertains at the palace, and then only on a most limited scale, when his guests are confined to a few college professors, high army offi- cers or intimate friends. Beside Boris the Ttalian princess' only royal com- panion will be Princess Eudoxia, the the King's 31-year-old unmarried sister, who lives at the palace, If King Victor Emmanuel's beautiful daughter is fond of sports such as ten- 1is. golf. croguet, horseback riding, hunt- ing or shooting, she will be disappointed to find that the King indulges in none of these pastimes. and that such games as these are indeed almost unknown in this primitive Balkan country. Even if the princess should seek diversion in_ playing bridge or chess or other parlor games, she will find that Boris detests such distractions. He prefers to sit down by the royal fireside and read about Einstein's latest discoveries in the realm of metapt Fond of Music and Drama. On the other hand. Giovanna may find _consolation in the fact that her royal partner is fond of music, the theater, the opera, literature, art and TO “C” RIGHT “C” FORIGHT Examination Free 35 Unbreakable Shell Frames Genuine Toric Lenses THE FORIGHT OPTICAL CO. 907 G St. NW.
