24 RING WRITER LANDS BIG ADAMS “BEAT” Stumbled Into Cabinet . “Scoop.” Qared Only for Sports, but i { A sports writer on one of the Boston nBwspapers is credited with landing the “geoop” on the publication of President- | elpct Hoover's selection of Charles | Francis Adams of Boston as . Secretary | of the Navy. This sports writer, who thinks only | in the terms of the sporting world, and | 0 holds very lightly such persons as cdbinet members, landed the exclusive Adams story in Miami Beach, where he | hiid gone in advance of the Sharkey- | Stribling fight. He was only to engage | himself in matters relating to that bat- | tl. The Washington correspondent of | h; newspaper was in Miami for the | plirpose of covering Mr. Hoover, and incldentally to pick up something ex- clusive about the new cabinet persornel. | But it fell to the sports writer to stumble across the cabinet scoop. The | night following the departure from Florida of Mr. Hoover and the army of Four Big Specials In TOWELS - (Seconds) A special purchase of fine 41uam Turkish Bath Towels brings these big values just at this time. This made the Boston sports writer prick up his ears. He was interested at once, be- | cause there is a Charles F. Adams who | is vice president of the Boston Braves | base ball team and otherwise prominent | in the Hub's sporting life. The sports writer felt greatly relleved, however, | whent he learned after further ques- | tioning that it was not the Charles| Francis Adams he knew so well who was to go into M . Hoover's cabinet, but | some one else br that name who was| connected with Rarvard.” Not being especially interested but | being a good reporter, he included a note at the end of his Sharkey-Demp- | sey story that night which read: “City editor—It has been given to me straight that some bird by the name of Charles Francis Adams—not the big boy, but some guy connected with Harvaru College—has been picked for Secretary of the Navy. This might be worth looking up. Take it for what it js worth, but don't mix this bird up | with the big boy by that name.” The city editor did some investigating.| and, much to his surprise, learned from | Mr. Adams (the right one) that it was true he had been asked by Mr. Hoov to take over the Navy portfolo and that he had readily accepted. Then | followed the printing of the “scoop.” Baked Fish. Use two pounds of codfish, halibut, whitefish or & whole haddock.
