THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON. D. C. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28 1929.° FOCK 1S HOPEFUL AS DEATH LURKS Marshal Believes He Will Re- cover Despite Pessimistic View of Friends. | | By the Associated Press. PARIS, February 28 —While Marshal Foch is well prepared for death, he still believes he will recover from his present | devastating iliness, friends say. ; These friends have an intense admi- | ration for the fortitude with which the aged warrior has borne the suffering of his_infirmity, the patience with which he has submitted to treatment and the keenness of his intellect | But they do not share the marshal's | hope. Every day now finds his strength reduced still more and makes more ap- parent that in view of his 78 years it is | remarkable that he has resisted so long. | His life, one of his friends said, is a | | i flame still burning steadily, but at the mercy of the least puff of wind. To shield it from such a puff is the con- | stant endeavor of the marshal's medi C’\l | attendants and his family. Among the marshal's visitors _\l""f‘!’- day was Father L'Hande. famous Jesuit preacher, who came at Foch's own re- quest. The marshal insisted, however, there be no talk of extreme unction, the rite of the Roman Catholic Church for the faithful who are in danger of | death “He talked about Napoleon's cam- paign in Italy,” said the priest. The official bulletin this morning said “The marshal's condition is stationary. | His temperature is 99.3, pulse 86." The Circle Walkers. Persons lost, in the open country en- || deavor to find their way out by walking and after many hours or days of plod- | dings often find their way back to the starting point, which is exceedingly dis- concerting, to say the least. This has been noticed long since, and the expla- nation offered was that in the human | anatomy one leg is generally longer than | the other and so we walk around the | circle. Experiments tried upon blind | phrsons and biindfolded prove that this circle-walk- | irg is a universal trait. Those lost in | the open country describe a circle of 50 miles and the others upon whom tests have been made walked in much | smaller circles. They generally -walked clock-wise, but occasionally a subject was found who walked against the clock. Pictures of paths rhade by blindfolded person are decidedly indi- vidual in detail and show something about his personality. People who con- | centrate easily on what they are told to do walk i ooth spirals, while people of the plodding type make paths con- sisting of long and regular series of spiral turns, ail in the same direction and gradually growing smaller. Wild animals when hard pressed run in circles because fear overcomes the orienting power of the eve and mnose and then the spiraling mechanism leads | them in “circles.” 3 ADVERTISEMENT MEDICINE ON THE MARKET” Says Well-Known Virginia Man In Speaking of Miller’s Herb Extract.
