BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, February 28—Urgent buying of the copper stocks feature today’s strong and active stock ‘market. to the movement. The best prices of Anaconda, touching 148, was up more | than 7 points on the day. Just before | the close United States Steel ran up | spectacularly. At 192 it was up between 6 and 7 points. Bethlehem Steel went | along with the leader. Another strong | stock at the end was Brooklyn Union Gas. ‘The turnover was the largest in nearly | a month andyactivity was greatest when prices were rising. Call money renewed at 8 per cent. Copper Stocks Lead. Copper stocks were leaders as they had been earlier in the week. The price of the metal advanced again, this time above 19 cents. It looked as though consumers were anticipat- |ing requirements, fearful lest the price should go still higher. | New high records were almost uni- form in the copper stocks. Among i those that sold higher today than ever |before were Anaconda, Andes, Cerro de | Pasco, Greene Cananea. Kennecott and Chile. Others in the group showed | gains. All are profiting from the present heavy demand for the red metal and all are likely to pass along larger disbursements to shareholders sooner or later. Meanwhile, according to the popular view, they offered ideal specu- lative mediums. The express company stocks were all .very strong. Adams Express was up more than 25 points, American Express more than 12 points and American Railway Express as much in the firt two hours of trading. AH of these are high-priced stocks, Adams selling over $500 a share, but it was one of the characteristics of the market that the higher-priced stocks moved the fastest. Case Threshing Machine jumped 10 points, approaching 480. American Can made a new high for the present shares. National Cash Register was taken up again and there was renewed buying in General Cable issues, with a new high for the class A stock. Steels Steady. The steels were steady but not buoy- ant. United States Steel, selling ex- dividend of $1.75, was a shade higher, and Bethlehem bettered by a fraction its previous high since just after the war. Bethlehem was very active. Railroad stocks were higher at the start, but they did not hold all of their gain. The Street is still waiting for the decision in the O'Fallon case. Once that is out of the way, traders wiH be willing to take a position in the rails, but meanwhile they are very cautious. Vanadium (14). Victor Talkg(4). Va-Caro Chem. . Va-CarCh 6%pf. Latest reports men- tioned the Corn Exchange Bank, with its wide branch system, as a likely {member of the Guaranty Trust Bank of Commerce combine. Chelsea Exchange Bank stock also jumped on rumors of possible merger with a large downtown | New York banking institution. ‘Wall Street interpreted an article en- titled “The New Crude Prices,” which appears in the current issue of the hm& official organ of the Standard | Oll Co. of New Jersey, as meaning an- other reduction in crude oil prices is near. It states that although prices were cut on an average 16 cents a bar- rel, the declines were not drastic enough and fi‘llnu out unsatisfactory conditions resul from overproduction. , Efforts will be made to restrict sales of shares in the eight European Ford companies now being organized to citi- 2zens of the countries in which they are located, Wall Street heard today. (At Newton) Consider Cactaceae In the blistering deseris of Arizona a man may wander for days without finding water—and eventually die of thirst while the means of saving his life stands beside him. The Cactaceae Apuntia has an alarm- ing name, but it is one of man’s best friends. It is the thick-bodied, bristly variety of cactus—hedgehog, turk’s cap, barrel cactus are some of its names—and by cutting off the top and hollowing out the center a man in the desert may get enough moisture to last him indefinitely. A savings fund is like, moisture in the desert—it comes to the rescue when you need it most. Invested in the First Mortgage Notes sold by Swartzell, Rheem & Hensey Com- pany, your savings are not only ab- solutely safe—they are earning for you a steady 6%, paid twice annually and assured by our record of nearly sixty years without loss to an investor.
