BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. % | Special Dispatch to The Star. i . NEW YORK, February 16.—At last thoroughly alarmed over the determi- nation of the Federal Reserve author- ities to check speculation, the Stock Market broke sharply today. Right at the start stocks were thrown overboard in huge volume, apparently regardless of price. Practically every active issue opened at substantial losses, not so great in matter of points as has been seen in many other weak markets, but signifi- cant in view of the fact that the de- clines were measured from the lower level at Friday's close. The result was that new lows for the current reaction and in some instances new lows for the vear were reached all along the line. Extent of Break. An idea of the extent of the break may be had from the subjoined table showing opening prices. volume and net loss from Friday's close: Volume. 4.000 10,000 10000 Prjce. Decline. o 3! 7 5. 1490 5. X 5. s, 000 Beare Roeouck For a brief period after the opening sure was renewed and the losses in- creased. At the same time the decline was orderly, remarkably so. Radio at 340 was down 16 points. Johns-Manville broke below 200 for a loss of some 5 points. Westinghouse | Electric at 145 was off from 3 to 4 points. Wright Aeronautical under 260 was down over 6 points. Much larger losses might have been seen were it not for the extent of the short interest. Pool stocks naturally suffered the most. Inernational Combustion dropped nearly 6 points at one time. The pub- lic utilities were lower, but American & Foreign Power which has been the leader in this group all week, was well supported on the decline. Oils were relatively steady. Motors Resist Trend. show of resistance. General Motors opened with only a fractional loss, al- though {t sold lower subsequently. Hud- son was not down very much at the start. Packard and Hupp were weak. An interesting feature was the way in which the railroad stocks came down with the industrials. Pails have not been the object of extravagant spec. ulation for the rise and the explanation of their weakness was that they were being liquidated to protect other hold- ings. Pennsylvania, for instance, went to a new low for the year, plainly from this cause. The same was true of }iew Y?;’: Central. iere was a slight and irregular rall at the close. Baltimore & Ohio left ofl with a net gain on the day. Steel sold above its extreme low at the end, but | Radio was down 21 points on the last sale, American Smelting down 3 points and Montgomery-Ward down 5 points. Kennecott left off unchanged, while Anaconda was down over 2 points. | Trading was heavy throughout the ses- sion. FOREIGN EXCHANGE. (Quotations furnished by W. B. Hibbs & Co.) NEW YORK, February 168 (#).—The cotton market opened steady today at an advance of 6 points to a decline of 1 point. Most months were higher in sym- pathy with relatively firm Liverpool cables. The advance to 20.06 for May and 19.45 for the new October contract met considerable week-end realizing, how- ever. The action of the stock market seemed to restrict buying and bring in some Wall street liquidation. Prices eased off under these offerings. May sold down to 19.99 before the end of the first half hour, or back to about yester- day’s closing quotations. Private cables reported covering, trade calling and scarcity of contracts in Liv- erpool, but complained of a poor turn- over in cotton clothes and yarns and said order lists were running down. Cotton on shipboard awaiting clear- ance was estimated at 159,9¢ bales, against 120,400 last year.
