Al Street By the Associated Press. NEWCASTLE-ON-TB}!’NE. 'E!nslam!i January 31.—Sadden y scenes of mxseryrznd squalor, the Prince of Wales ‘was winding up this trip through the northern coal fields today. . “It's ghastly, positively ghastly,” he exclaimed more than once as he wit- nessed in many mining villages poverty which shocked and surprised him. Indignation was expressed frequently by the prince to officials. One of the worst places visited was the village of Benton, where a collection of tumble-down cottages was in a sea of mud. Rolling his trousers high above his shoe tops, the prince plunged through the quagmire. B2ing told that “It's horrible!” “But they are rent free,” he was told. “That's the best that can be said about them,” the prince answered with a contemptuous ejaculation. In the dark room of one cottage the lence said to an occupant, “Not much ight here. However do you find your way_about?” “We are glad to find any place to live,” a woman replied. “Some of these cottages have been condemned, but they are homes to us.” At Hartford, Mrs. Foster, a miner’s wife, talked freely about the trials of her family of seven, ranging in age from 14 years to 13 months. “They know what it means to go hungry.” she said after describing thelr manner of living, and as if such a con- dition were a matter to be taken for granted. © The husband's wages are sometimes as low as 23 shillings (about $5.75) a week, and out of this he had to take care of nine persons, although last week they considered themselves rich with 33 shillings. Some cottagers at Bedlington had written the prince relating their condi- tion. He responded by calling at their poor homes a long, dismal stretch of buildings, each of which was exactly like the others. In one of the dwellings the prince brought joy to a paralyzed girl, who was scarcely able to talk when he stood by her side speaking words of sym- pathy. Another girl, Sarah Lee, 16, told the royal visitors that she had an offer to 80 to Australia, but wasn't sure whether she would like it. “You'll like it all right, Sarah,” said the prince. “I've been there and can tell you it is a jolly fine place.” “Well, if it is good enough for you, sir, it’s good enough for me,” she an- swered. “That's the spirit,” he sald, with a smile.
