“tory was accorded young 22 ® 2 MECRAONTED BY WESTERN Hih Winners- of ‘Honorary “Ws” and Other Honors Are Announced.‘ Thirty-two students of Western High School were graduated at 1 o'clock this afternoon at commencement exercises presided over by Dr. Frank W, Ballou, superintendent of schools. Opened by the invocation of Rev. l Henry Teller Cocke, rector of All Saints Protestant Epitcopfl Church, the pro- gram was marked by the annonucement of honor roll graduatés and winners of special awards. Edward Dawson headed the honor roll.-with an average rating that fell barely below' pprfect for the full four-year course. -Others named as honor graduates by Dr. El- || mer S. Newton, principal, were Betty l Baum, Priscilla Bunker and Benjamls Dulaney. “W” Winners Are Named. Following the honor roll graduates, Dr. Newton announced the winners of honorary “W's,” enameled silver pins bearing the Western High School “W”. These awards went to Elizabeth Smith, writer and poet; Benjamin Dulaney, dramatics and publications; Edwurd Dawson, scholarship; Alexander Stev- ens, stage management; Winton Brown, musical productions; Margaret Becker, accompanist, and Jean Westbrook, or- chestra and solo work. ‘While the zrwdustlnswcllu was the center of attraction at the exrcises, hon- ors were accorded also to a group of undergraduates whose scholastic attain- ments have been high. Six students were inducted in Phi Beta Rho, the national honor society of high schools, by Miss Irene Rice, faculty representa- | tive, and Miss Elizabeth Clark, president of the society. The initiates were Ruth Bradshaw, Ruth Constantini, Aleese Kenney, Margaret Cromwell, Willlam Dix and Willette Sullivan. Following the invocation, Rev. January 31.— ‘The local Water Dej s junk- ed or sold all its surplus iron water extension pipes and h copper laterals in -making: extensions from mains into private propesty, it was announced today. It was. -explained that copper pipes are not. so expensive, when length of service is considered, and that the city has spent large sums in recent wears repairing leaks in iron pipes.
