J., January 31.— Two white men of the crew of the President Johnson of the Dollar Steam- ship Line lost their lives early this morning when a fire broke out in the forecastle of the steamer, docked at the foot of Twelfth street. Both bodies are as yet unidentified. One, a junior engineer, lost his life when, after making his way from the burning quarters of the crew, he went back to retrieve his clothing. The other was burned to death in his bunk, where he slept. ‘The majority of the crew was made r up of Chinese. The fire itself caused little damage. Four men, including one Jersey City fireman, are in local hospitals suffering " severe burns. Officials of the Dollar Line are check- ing up to ascertain the identity of the two victims and the whereabouts of several reported missing.
