ADELMAN ELECTED ASSOCIATION HEAD Chevy Chase Citizens Name Officers—Community Chest Nove Indorsed. | Arthur Adelman was elected presi- dent of the Chevy Chase Citizens' As- sociation at its annual meeting in the E. V. Brown School, Connecticut ave- rue and McKinley street, last night. (Mr. Adelman, active in affairs of the association for a number of years, has { headed several committees as chairman | and served last year as vice presi- dent. | Other officers chosen were: First vice | | president, H. V. Schreiber: second vice { president, Edwin S. Hege; secretary- | treasurer, S. von Ammon, and dele- | gates to the Federation of Citizens’ Associations, Mr. Hege and Lewis Rad- cliffe. Unanimous approval was given to the | { Community Chest movement in reso- lutions adopted, which urged the co- operation of all residents of the com-| | munity in making it a success. | In presenting a motion to indorse ! the proposed $10.000,000 school bill of Representative Simmons_for immedi- { ate school needs, Fred S. Lincoln, mem- { ber of the new schools committee, de- clared almost anything would be bet- | Iter than the five-year school building | program, which, he said, is going into its sixth year nowhere nearly com- pleted. He characterized the five-year ! program for schools as a device to in- | hibit rather than stimulate school de- | velopment. Action was taken urging insertion of an item of $15,000 in the District appropriation bill for grading and oth- {er work incidental to construction of | the new Mertz School on Grant road. | J. Francis Moore, chairman of the new schools committee, pointed out that a desire of residents to have erected a two-story building instead of the usual three-story affair necessitated a change of plans with resultant increased cost. The ground is already owned by the District, it was said, and $175,000 has ibeen made available for the work, but an additional $15,000 is needed and Congress will be urged to provide for it. Indorsement was given to the Cram- ton bill for the creation of the Gem’ze Washington Memorial Parkway and to THE EVENING STAR, SCIENTIST AT 76 THREE MAJOR Hopes to Measure Speed of Light as Accurately as Possible. Diameter of Stars and Proof of Einstein Theory Are Other “Jobs.” By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, January 17.—At the age of 76 Prof. A. A. Michelson, distin- guished scientist of the University of | Chicago, who computed the speed of | light. has outlined three major tasks| for_himself. | One of his “jobs,” he said, will be a| new measurement of light speed, to| bring a computation even more accurate | than before. Prof. Michelson already has measured the speed of light and his calculation of 186.: 254 miles a second | is accepted as being “right within fl single mile.” Now he is seeking “utter accuracy, or as close to utter accuracy as I can at- | tain.” Prof. Michelson also will attempt to perfect a method by which the diameter of stars may be measured with greater exactness’ His third undertaking is to be a final test of the Einstein theory of relativity, — e the proposal to advance $16,000,000 to the District for use in purchasing land for parks and playgrounds, which would be paid back to the Federal Gov- ernment at the rate of $1,000,000 & year without interest. Further complaint was against the continued dumping of trash and garbage in a ravine on the south side of Nebraska avenue east of Connecticut avenue, where, it was said, a public nuisance has resulted and, as it is a menace to health, the secretary was directed to write a letter to the Commissioners requesting that the practice be stopped. registered Completion of the extension and|- grading of Nebraska avenue northeast to Daniels road is to be urged. The executive committee was directed to consider the advisability of providing entertainment and speakers at each meeting. “How Women_ TRINITY CHARLES business. | Thursday Evening, AT THE W Rome make not all sizes Beds, creton sell): i Windsor Ty (3 to sell) grade (3 to All Layer tresses, four (5 tosell). to sell) (4 to sell) (10 pairs to double size Box Spring Outfit (only $64.50 FREE LECTURE AND DEMONSTRATION MRS. Last November he expressed doubt of the correctness of Einstein, but now he is “almost convined” that Einstein is right in the belief of the non-existence of what science terms ether. He plans to return to Mount Wilson Observatory in California upon termina- tion of his lecture course at the uni- versity a month hence. When he com- pletes these three undertakings Prof. Michelson said he may enjoy “a bit of leisure.” In explaining his love for the science to which he has devoted his long life, he said: “It is the pitting of one’s brain against bits of iron, metals and crystals and making them do what you want them to do. When you are sucessful that is all the reward you want.” Earth Shock Felt in Italy. LECCE, Italy, January 17 (#).—A slight undulatory earthquake was felt here at 1:12 a.m. today. There was no damage.
