FINANCIAL. BOND PRICES DROP [N HEAVY MARKET U. S. and High-Grade Cor- \poration Issues Hit by Money Rate. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. &pecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, January .17. — Bonds that are influenced chiefly by money rates were distinctly heavy today. Not only did the United States Government group sag off, reaching the lowest price on this movement, but there were signs of moderate selling in the high-grade corporation list and of a withdrawal to await a clearer situation of some of the institutions that have been the main support of the market for weeks. The United States Liberty issues were again below par. Although the volume of trading in them was not large, they were weaker in appearance than since last Summer. The Treasury issues also declined with the 4!4s and the two issues of 33g per cent certificates suf- fered mosi. The 33%s of 1947 at one time were off % and over 8 poins from the price at which they were selling a year ago. All of the short term Treasury cer- tificates were likewise heavy, with the 3% due in March, quoted close to a 5 per cent basis and 4!4 per cent notes due in September and in Décember, at discounts ranging from ¢ to 3% .per cent. Among the corporation bonds that re- | flected the conditions overshadowing the Government list were Atchison 4s, Union Pacific 41¢s, Baltimore & Ohio refunding 5s, Pennsylvania 43;s, Stand- ard Ofl of New Jersey 5s and Prisco p lien 4s. ere were numerous declines in the straight mortgage issues of industrial companies. National Dairy Products 5148 were under pressure, selling at the lowest. of the year. ADVANCE IN CURB PRICES CONTINUES Standard of Indiana Holds| Chief Interest—Utilities in Demand. BY WILLIAM F. HEFFERNAN. Special Dispatch to The Star. | NEW YORK, January 17.—Specula- tive interest in curb nmarket issues broadened today and took in numerous groups which had been lagging behind recently. Standard of Indiana still held the spotlight, and after opening-on a block of 6,500 shares at 100, a gain of almost a point, it was turned over in enormous volume within a range of 2 points of this figure. . The open fight between the Rockefeller and Stewart factions to obtain sufficient proxies to accomplish | their purpose at the coming meeting | was still credited as the basis for the | d°mand for the Indiana shares. { The spectacular Ford Motor of Can- {ada stock appeared to have settled down |around the 675 level, where it left off | yesterday, although at the outset it re- corded a gain of 20 points. Public utilities were among the lead- | ers of the advance, with special strength in such issues as Penn-Ohio Edison up { almost 3 points, Electric Investors up ( more than 2 points, Lone Star Gas al- most a point higher and United Gas up |a like amount and all at new high | prices for the year. United Gas was| considered attractive inasmuch as it controls four complete systems for the production, transportation and sale of natural gas to the principal centers of | Eastern and Southern Texas and West- | ern Louisiana. ‘The mining shares as a group were in better demand, influenced by strength in related issues on the stock exchange. Anglo Chilean Nitrate reached a new |t.o§1 for the yea¥ above 42, Newmont | Mining gained some 3 points, Noranda { and Kennecott Copper new were higher | and even the low priced Ohlo Copper | managed to establish a new top at 3. | Alrcraft. issues were inclined to work | higher but the group was without par- * | ticular feature. Ford Motor, Ltd., the shares representing the British com- pany, was fractionally lower most of the time, but pressure was not pronounced. { Curant Motors sold fractionally higher, following announcement of the changes in the directorate. Guardian Fire Insurance capital stock of $10 par value was wadmitted to trading and changed hands initially at 5985, Later the price rallied across the 60 level. New high records were marked up in such speclalty favorites as Fash- ion' Park Co., incident with announce- ment of the proposed merger with Weber & Heilbroner and the Stein- Bloch Co. Squibbs up 10 points at 76, Mond Nickel up more than a point and Schulte Real Estate almost 2 points higher. The heavy demand for Fox Theaters class.“A” was coincident with reports that an. important announce- ment was forthcoming within the next few days. This was thought to have to do with new acquisitions. Trans-Lux C., THURSDAY, ‘NEW YORK CURB‘' MARKET Received by Private Wire Direct to The Star Office Special Dispatch to The Star. X CHICAGO, January ° 17.—Bulging prices for corn in Argentina and’at Liverpool sent the corn market here soaring anew today in the early deal- ings. All Chicago deliveries of corn jumped to a new high price record for the season. Opening at 14 off to ¥s up, Chicago corn soon scored general gains. ‘Wheat, oats and provisions were also stronger, with wheat starting unchanged to % advance and afterward holding near to the initial figures. Sharp advances in corn values today at Buenos Afres, as much as 2lg a bushel in some cases, were promptly seized upon here as confirming acute need of further rain to relieve drought in the Argentine corn belt. Mean- while, the Liverpool Corn Market was reported as 27 up overnight for United States corn, which was still undersell- ing corn from Argentina. An additional stimulus to corn buy- ing in Chicago today was an estimate 38 93 '48 109% s1d 109 1., 10: Ut bs A 58, 9 4 Hous Gulf G 6s A '43 9 6 Ind Oil & Gas 6s '39.. 107 111Ind P&L 55 A '37.... 99% 9Kop G & Coke 58 Laclede Gas 5128 '35 . 1 Lehigh Pow 6s A 2026 1 11 Lone Tal Lt s 45 1 McCord Rad 65 '43.. 98 Na Strauss Inc 6s ‘38 136 81,3 "25,. 101 A 20 00 0% 04 % 1 &) aB0mt 5% 274 | and thin, 20; old hens, 27a31; Leghorns, current - that the probable export sur- plus of the 1929 Argentine corn crop was only 157,000,000 bushels based upon existing conditions.
