THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, D. C, THURSDAY, JANUARY 17, 1929: + CEDAR INDUSTRY'S PEASCONSERED House Ways and Means| Group Takes Up Wood Schedule. By the Associated Press. Taking up the wood schedule in its | consideration of tariff revision, the House ways and means committee to- day heard supplemental oral pleas for relief of the Northwest cedar industry. In a brief filed with the committee two days ago 180 cedar mills in Wash- ington, Oregon and Idaho asked that shingles and cedar lumber be taken from the free list and be given a duty | of 25 per cent ad valorem. ~ugmenung this argument, Repre- sentative Hadley of Washington, a Re- oublican member of the committee, to- Jay read into the record a joint memo- <ial adopted by the Washington Legis- :ature declaring the present law dis- >riminated against domestic producers and appealing for a tariff to protect 125,000 American wage earners now in competition with Oriental labor in Brit- ish Columbia. A. C. Edwards of Everett, Wash,, speaking for the tariff committee of the cedar industry, said the 25 per cent duty would equalize costs of production in this country and British Columbia. The War Department took a hand in the hearing yesterday, entering a plea, on national defense grounds, that pro- | lection be given private small arms | manufacturers. Lieut. Col. Townsend Whelen of the Ordance Department, appearing at the request of Secretary of War Davis, told the committee during hearings on the metals schedule that the Government Retiring from Business: Sale Now On!
