RUTH'S DEATH ISHELD ACCIDENTAL Rymor of Breach Over Daughter Between Babe and Family Branded as False. By the Assoclated Press. BOSTON, January 17.—Babe Ruth saw the face of his dead wife for the first time in the early morning hours today after a hurried trip through cold and deserted streets to the home of her ‘family in South Boston. The body had been brought back to family and friends late last night after- a four- day official: inquiry into the circum- stances of her tragic death had finally closed. Ruth prayed at the casket, banked with flowers which he had sent. The greatest of home-run hitters was strick- en with grief and left on the arms of friends. He sald he would return for the funeral services in the house and at the grave this morning. Miss Joanna Woodford, sister of Mrs. Ruth, collapsed as the casket was brought into the living room. Jacob Ruppert, owner of the New York Yankees; Miller Huggins, manager of the team; Lou Gehrig, first baseman and Ruth’s chief competitor for home- run honors, and Herbert Pennock, pitcher of the team, all were represent- «d by floral tributes. Y.—The favorite sport now of all newspapers and politiclans 1s picking Mr. Hoover’s cabinet out for him. Anybody that that has ever indorsed a cigarette has been named to be on it. I don't care how many of these “write-up” cabinets you have been picked on. ‘The only one that is going to draw any salary is the one Mr. Hoover picks himself. He is going to fool you when he picks his “all-American.” He is going to have so many business men on there that he will make poli- ticians wish they had taken up some other life. GARDEN CROWS LUSTILY. Madison Square Arena Filled With Poultrydom’s Royalty. NEW YORK, January 17 (#).—One guess as to what made Madison Square Garden crow so lustily yesterday—yes, it was the poultry show. Fifty-seven hundred roosters and hens, representing quite the best fam- ilies in the poultrydom of 3¢ American States and a half dozen foreign coun- tries, and pigeons, with pet stock, were on exhibition. gan, that “his hopes will be realized so far as the family of Mrs. Ruth is con- cerned.” State Fire Marshal Neal declared that experts investigating the origin of the Cemetery. Tomorrow morning there will be a requiem mass at St. Augus- tine's Church, South Boston. Ruth arranged to leave for New York after the funeral today, taking with him 9- year-old Dorothy, daughter of Babe and Mrs. Ruth. Babe went to the Academy of the Assumption at Well- esly yesterday for the child. District Attorney Robert T. Bush- nell and State Fire Marshal George C. Neal, in statements, set at rest any suspicion that Mrs. Ruth’s death last Friday night in a fire at the home in ‘Watertown of Dr. Edward H. Kinder, Boston dentist, was not accidental. Mrs. Ruth had been known to neigh- bors as Mrs. Helen Kinder for more than a year. District Attorney Bushnell said that a second autopsy conducted by Medical Examiner George B. Magrath of Suf- folk County, had confirmed the evi- dence of a first, that Mrs. Ruth’s death was caused by fire. “The fire, in turn,” he said, “has been established as accidental by the State fire marshal's office. There was no evidence of poison. The case is closed so_far as this office is concerned, and T hope, for the sake of the unfortunate woman, who cannot speak for herself, that it is closed as far as any one else is concerned.” Her Family Favors Silence. Mrs. Ruth's family, the Woodfords, immediately responded to Bushnell's ap- peal to close the case by annpuncing through their counsel, Judson Hanni- —_— 2001 16th St. N.W. By the Associated Press. ALBUQUERQUE, N. Mex., January 17.—A joint committee from both houses of the New Mexico Legislature was ordered to come here today from Santa Fe to open investigation into the death last Sunday of Helen Askew, 18, of Portales, inmate of the New Mexico Girls' Welfare Home, a correc- tional institution. ‘The girl's death, a coroner’s jury found yesterday, was caused by “the lack of water and an injection of twi- light. sleep administered by Dr. Evelyn Frisble and Miss Bertha Lips,” physi- cian and superintendent, respectively, at-the home. The drug was administered to Miss Askew and five other girls “to keep them quiet” when they created a dis- turbance in objecting to solitary con- finement and bread and water diet, punishment imposed for their escape from the home. Miss Lips said the in- jection was under Dr. Frisbie’s direc- tion. Gov. R. C. Dillon, in ordering the legislative investigation yesterday, said he would accompany the committee here to inquire into conditions at the home. At the same time District At- torney Eugene Lujon said he was study- ing evidence with a view toward filing criminal charges against the principals in Miss Askew's death. The six girls escaped Wednesday and were captured and returned Friday.
