WOMAN'’S PAGE.,” Stockings Vary With Gown and Hour BY MARY MARSHALL. If the fashion for short skirts has|have acquired stockings consclousness. done nothing else, it has taught women the tremendous importance of nice stockings. And now even if long skirts Personally I feel convinced that we are a long, long way from really long skirts; and the uneven skirt line and skirt drapery only serve to emplasize stockings rather than to conceal them. French women have for years made more distinction between the sort of stockings worn at different hours of the day and for different types of costume than have American women. They have been more inclined to wear fine quality lisle stockings for sports and street wear than have Americans, and have been much more inclined to reserve the | very sheer, flesh-colored silk stockings for evening wear. | Here there is a growing tendency to | vary the stockings with the gown, and the hour. Many well dressed American | women wear silk and wool stockings for the street in cold weather and wool stockings for sports. Iisle stockings of very good quality have been chosen by many women for sports wear at South- ern resorts this Winter. With brown, wine-colored, dark blue or green kid shoes for street or after- noon wear many women do not wear flesh-colored stockings. — They wear transparent silks to match the color of the shoe or a dull, dusty shade of the same color. With evening frocks of un- even skirt drapery or that dip down at the back, it is often better to wear stockings of the e tone as the frock. A charming little linen frock from Ttaly served as the inspiration for this week's home dressmaker’s help. It con- tains a cross-titch Assisi chicken—the most characteristic embroidery motif of the needlewomen of Assisi, Italy. If you would like to know precisely how to make one of these charming chickens, useful for trimming a child’s frock, a blouse or a lunch cloth, please send me THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. There are various ways of keeping flesh down without dieting too much, though for a really stout person, I do not see how massages, special baths and all the other up-to-date tricks for beau- tifying people are going to be of much value without cutting down the food ration as well. ‘There are any number of institutes, gymnasiums, schools, classes and such which reduce you more or less in spite of yourself, if you have the money to expend. Most of them are very good, too. Massage is excellent, exercise is vital, and it’s no use scolding a woman for having become too fat in the past. The thing is to help her work it off as soon as possible. ‘You can go to one of these places, sit. a cabinet with a battery of electric lights turned on you, lamps giving off the infra-red rays which are most bene- ficial. After a profuse perspiration, you can either be massaged or scrubbed all over, or both, and then rinsed off with cold water. Yowll have perspired ofl some flesh, and had more massaged out of you and it's fine if you don't at once eat it all back, You also can be rolled with special apparatus and you can have quite a lot of things done to work off flesh one way or the other. Some fat people can- not exercise either because of disease or weakened condition owing to their own extra weight! For these, rollers, massage, vibrating belts, all such things, are fine. But for the woman who has little money and less time, diet is best! And good, hard hand massage over any spe- cially fat part of her body. Dieting takes no time, in fact it saves it, since it means less cooking; and less time to eat. And massage can be done in odd moments, preferably bath times. Hot baths, by the way, do not reduce under such treatment until it ceases to grow. If at some time you can have the electric needle used for each scpa- rate hair, you will be able to get rid of these hair permanently. In the mean- time, bleach this hair, and do not do | anything to make it worse even though | you can get it off so easily. | | | Expression. If by any chance you don’t happen to like your expression, you can nlways‘ change it, you know. Your features| you must keep; beyond a little soften- | ing of the bad points and accentuating of good ones, there is not much you can | do. But your facial expression is your | own to make or to change. If you look best smiling, you can quite deliberately turn up the corners of your | mouth, not enough to go around always | with a broad grin, but enough to give | the impression that you are just on the | edge of a smile. If you are best serious, | you can deliberately cultivate a quiet, steady way of looking at people, which will make a good impression for you, and give a good impression of you. If animation is what suits you, you can cultivate false animation, and presently youw'll find a certain natural animation has become a habit. The great trouble with most girls| who ought to be pretty and are not, is nervousness. I mean that they are neurotic, they talk too much and too meaninglessly, their gestures add noth- ing to what they are saying; they'd much better sit still and say nothing until they've something to say really worth listening to, and keeg their hands quiet instead of waving them foolishly in the air. If I sound as though I were scolding, I don’t mean to. I went to a large restaurant where couples and small parties of people were dining and dancing, and the women's shrill voices, Toys and Pets. One mother says: I feel that every child should have pets to love and care for, but it is un- fair for them to have them at such a baby age that they are cruel to the pets and likely to be hurt by them. In this day, when a toy kitten looks enough like the real animal to be mistaken for life, I have chosen good imitations and teach my little ones that it must not be crushed or hurt. I teach them to be gentle and loving with. toys, so that they will be able later to really care for and love a live animal. (Copyright, 1929.) Finger EBolls. FEATURES.' Gift Certificates. The giv- ing of these certificates, good in ex- change for merchandise to the amount stated, has become quite popular be- cause it obviates the possibility of use- less or unwished for gifts. First of all, one should get into the frame of mind that one is spending real money, not a fortuitous slip of paper. So many fall into the way of thinking “now is the long looked for chance to buy the things I never felt I could afford to possess.” Things we feel we cannot afford to| possess are almost invariably things which we can do_without. | January sales offer the diligent house- | wife ample opportunity to spend money most advantageously. Generally, these | sales are not of articles of personal use so_much as household articles. Here the housewife may ask herself, if I discard this yearly chance for per- sonal shopping I may have to do with- | out things all year long. Of course nothing of the sort is true. On the other hand, she may have mare | money to spend on herself. Instead of | buying things later in the year as they | become essential, she may buy them | now at much lower prices, and add the | savings if she likes to the money re- | served for “shopping for herself.” The January white sales are, of course, yearly occasions which few housewives care to miss. Every store and every shopping center has January sales of various natures, but generally of household wares and furnishings.
