WASHINGTON, D. C. TUESDAY, JANUARY 15, U. S. BANK DEPOSITS |MANUFACTURING GAINS SHOW LARGE GAINS Special Dispatch to The NEW YORK, January 15.—Deposits in American banks are growing rapid- ly. Two banks in New York—the Na- tional City and the Chase National— have deposits of more than $1,000,000,- 000 each. Five other banks in New York City have deposits of more than $500,000,000—the Guaranty Trust, Amer- ijcan Exchange Irving Trust, National Bank of Commerce, Bankers’ Trust and Equitable Trust. Seventeen other New York City banks have deposits of more than $100,000,000. The largest gain in New York in bank deposits _during the last 12 months was by the Bank of Manhattan, which increased its deposits from $215,- 820,000 to $465,000,000, a gain of 110 per cent during the year. Following closely was the Bank of America, which increased from $167,- 000,000 to $317,000.000, a gain of near- ly 90 per cent. This is the bank as- sociated with the Bank of Italy in California and other Giannini interests. Only three banks in New York re- port a decrease in deposits, and two of these are small. NEW YORK, January 15 (#).—In- quiry for machine tools from automo- tive, aeronautical and agricultural equipment makers is improving, and reports from nearly all sections of the country indicate that the holiday lull has been shorter than in previous years, says the American Machinist. Stock Supply Increase. NEW YORK, January 15 (@.— Floating supply of United States Steel Corporation common stock on December 31 as indicated by stock in brokers’ names increased 13,822 shares to 1,718, 256, or 24.15 per cent of the total issue of 7,116,235, over the September figure. On December 31, 1927, the floating sup- ply was 1,787,162 shares, or 25.11 per cent of total. NEW EXCHANG-E URGED. CHICAGO, January 15 (P).—A pro- posal to establish future trading in po- tatoes, apples, milk products and can- ned goods has been made to members of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in the annual message of its president, C. J. Eldredge. The exchange now deals only in butter and egg futures. Eldredge declared that future trad- ing provided the best means yet de- vised to protect crop growers in ad- vance of marketing. BALTIMORE, January 15.—Prelimi- nary figures of Baltimore’s manufactur- ing census for 1927 have been released by the United States Department of Commerce through the Industrial Bureau of the Baltimore Association of Commerce. The figures for 1927 show there were 2,075 manufacturing industries in Bal- timore, with an average number of wage earners of 83,285. The total value of products amounted to $702,053,762, while the cost of ma- terials amounted to $431,648,630. Wages paid were $94,078,374. . According to the director of the In- dustrial Bureau the total value of Bal- timore's manufactured products in 1927 was the highest in the history of the city, the highest previous total being in 1925, when the value was $678,947,199.
