SMITH ADVISERS HIT ROOSEVELT STAND G. 0. P. Leaders in New York Resent “Trickery Plot” Charged by Him. :% Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, January 15.—Some of former Gov. Smith’s close advisers here, as well as blican leaders, comment- ed unfavorably yesterday on Gov. Roosevelt’s “will-to-win” statement as the result of his survey of the spirit of the Democratic party nationally through correspondence with county Jeaders in the various States. While the statement followed a conference between the new governor and former | Gov. Smith, some of the latter’s friends resented what they interpreted as a bid for national leadership on the part of Gov. Roosevelt and the relegation Yof Mr. Smith to the background. “It looks more like self-advertising than an effort to help the party,” was the comment of one Smith supporter. See Accord With Raskob and Smith, On the other hand, some Democratic Politicians saw in the Roosevelt outline of the policies which should be pursued by the Democratic party during the next four years an apparent effort on the part of the governor to go along with the reported program of party ac- tivitles proposed by John J. Raskob, chairman of the Democratic national committee. They took it for granted that Mr. Raskob and former Gov. Smith were in agreement on this program. ‘The politicians, however, expressed doubt as to how far Gov. Roosevelt could go with the Raskob-Smith lead- ership without injuring his own polit- ical future, especially if his friends were looking forward to his candidacy for the presidency in 1932. The pre- diction was made that developments might result in Mr. Roosevelt gradually breaking away from the Smith-Raskob influence. This prediction was based on the assumption that both Mr. Smith and Mr. Raskob would not remain as dominant influences in the national party. No Washington Meeting Called. It was pointed out that the Wash- ington conference of national Demo- cratic leaders suggested by Mr. Raskob soon after the last election, designed to determine his own status as well as future party policies, had not mate- rialized. The reason that the meeting had not been called, it was said, was because a majority of the national Democratic leaders shown no enthusiasm toward Mr. Raskob's sug- gestion. Doubt was expressed that any such conference would be held. Gov. Roosevelt’s statement, taken to- gether with the announcement of an- other coast-to-coast speech by former Gov. Smith on the radio tomorrow night, and Mr. Raskob's prospective confer- ence with the governor at Albany, were considered in political clrcl!m as e, strategic move on the part of ‘the “big three” to proclaim their leadership in advance of the determination of Mr. Raskob's status, or the party activities, by the majority of the national leaders. 7. ¢ party reaction to such a move, it was predicted, would probably lead to open opposition to the Raskob-Smith leadership. Pelitical expediency, it was said, if this situation developed, would force Gov. Roosevelt to follow other na- tional leaders, Mr. Raskob was to depart for Albany today at 8:45 am. to accompany two of his daughters back to the Sacred Heart Convent, where they are pupils, H'm" expected to call on Gov. Roose- vel Republican leaders expressed resent- ment at the portions of Gov. Roose- velt’s statement where he intimated that > TfiE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., TUESDAY. JANUARY 15 1929.° that the governor, after his strong bid for co-operation and harmony with the Republican Legislature, should make such a statement. “Gov. Roosevelt could not have sald anything which would be resented more by his Republican friends, or which would more effectively alienate their support,” said one Republican State leas der. Other Republican leaders character- ized the governor’'s remarks as an in- sult to the great majority of the Amer- jcan people who voted for Herbert Hoover. Such statements, they de- clared, would not only weaken Mr. Roosevelt’s chances for re-election as governor, but would reflect adversely on, any aspirations he might have for his party had been “cheated out of the | the presidential nomination four years presidency.” Surprise was expressed hence, January Sale Featuring Special Values In Corsets, Corselettes, Girdles, Bandeaus and Brassieres Rose Marie Compact, imported silk brocade with detachable brassiere top—$15.00 value.
