Dinner for Supreme Court Last of 1928 State Events On White House Calendar Presidem: and Mrs. Coolidge Have No Other Official Functions Listed to Precede New Year Rcception. BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. 'H the brilliant reception to the judiciary as a thing of the ; ast and only the Supreme Court dinner Thursday remain- fng on the official social calendar of the White House before the reception on New Yearldatyblt‘h_e‘President m;lxr‘l tlkgisr' lidge are preparing to enjoy their las ristmas season gg:sen% envirgnspin a rather domestic way. Tuesday night they will dine with the Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. Mellon, and there will perhaps be one other cabinet dinner for them, that of the Secretary of War and Mrs. Davis, before the holidays. THERE was a far more brilliant and cheerful air about the judiciary reception than usual—red blossoms forming the greater part of the decoration in the state suite, and Mrs. Coolidge wearing a hand- some red velvet gown while the brilliant colors of many costumes seemed to warm up entire sections in the large company. RS. COOLIDGE receives small groups by appointment and carries on other official duties and yet has time to send flowers to friends who are ill, look after her Christmas shopping and do as she did last week, name a doll to be sold at a church fair. CARCELY does one group of important visitors move out of the S Capital than another arrives and this time it is the delegates to the International Conference of American States on Conciliation and Arbitration. This long name of an important body is occupying the greater part of many invitation cards arranged against the arrival of the delegates within a day or so. The President will meet the body, and the Secretary of State and Mrs. Kellogg will hold one of their splendidly appointed receptions in the Pan-American Union, when tge guests wil? whirl away into a merry dance as soon as their hosts receive them. IKEWISE the International Aeronautic Conference within a day L or two will bring another group of men for whom the Secretary of War and other officials will entertain. The Ambassador of Italy and Nobil Donna Antoinette de Martino will give one of the largest parties, entertaining for Gen. Balbo, who heads the Italian delegates; Assistant Secretary of State and Mrs. White will entertain, and the Ambassadors and Ministers from whose countries the delegates will come are arranging feasts and dances for them. HE merriest show in_wiew for society and a delightful change T from the long strimg of balls, is the society circus to be given in the Washington -Auditorium by the Junior League the afternoon and evening of December 19, when society women and men . will disport themselves in the arena. That it will be a lgtter-perfect performance from beginning to end—quite one’s money’s worth—is shown in the incessant rehearsals every day and sometimes oftener. ND doing a thriving business, as its name implies, is the Thrift A Shop on Tenth street, where with unwearying energy many of ‘the women- best known in society are adding to the success of a permanent business for assisting in the child welfare work of the city. The “store” or shop as they call it, is made gay with suggestion of Christmas comforts at real bargains.. A trip to the Thrift Shop is the ultimate end of every woman on Christmas shopping bent. The great masterpiece of work_done by Mrs. John Allan Dougherty and her cohorts will be the ball at the Willard on March 4, when thou- sands of citizens from all over the country will attend to see the notables of the Capital and assist in adding brilliancy to the affair. CE PRESIDENT-ELECT SENATOR CHARLES CURTIS, has giveni great impetus to. the work of committees for the carnival ball to be given at .the Willatrd Hotel the night of December 18, by the District of Columhig League of American Pen Women, by accepting the invitation of Mrs. Busch, president, to be a guest in her box. The Senator’s sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Everett Gann, also will be her guests for the ball. CHRISTMAS night would not take on’ its proper spirit without the Children’s Country Home ball, which for years has beckoned to the elite of Washington society to attend. Like other brilliant annual affairs for charity, the Children’s Country Home board may be making its last appeal through this festivity, for the home will be affiliated with the Community Chest, thus becoming a part of large movement to benefit the dependents of the District. o'clock being the hour.
