Few Rise. BY WILLIAM F, HE Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December 8.—Forced liquidation of accounts which had be- come impaired as a result of yesterday's acute weakness carried curb stocks down sharply today. One of the outstanding weak stocks was Niles-Bement-Pond, which broke over 10 points before selling ran its course. Around today's low it was down some 40 points from the high. Its re- action was just one instance of what was likely to occur in numerous other volatile specialties. Grigsby-Grunow at 108 was down 8 points on the day. Losses of 1 to 2| points were common in other recent speculative favorites. Marmon Motor, around 72, most 5 points and Stutz was subject- ed to heavy selling pressure. Other motors, however, encountered fair sup- port. As a group, the mining stocks work- ed lower, but pressure was not pro- nounced. Electric Bond & Share Securities, one of the most prominent of the hold- ing companies, dropped almost 5 points on a heavy turnover ,and United Gas & Improvement was pressed for sale. Marconi issues were changed ohly fractionally, but no effort was put forth 'ERNAN, lost al- | to rally the market for Canadian Mar- coni following the recent drastic break. Among the few issues moving con- trary to the general trend were Neve Drug, class A and common. At 34 the former stock was up 3 points. The demand was influenced by the report that control of the company is to go to United Cigar Stores and Whelan Drug interests if terms of the acquisi- tlon are approved by Neve stockholders. American Smelting & Refining new shares broke sharply and Montgomery Ward new sold at a fresh low on the move. The ticker failed to keep pace with transactions on the fioor. INDUSTRIES THRIVE ON COLOR CHANGES “Eye Appeal” Plays Impor- tant Part in Sale of Products. BY J. C. ROYLE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December 8.—Ability to | distinguish colors and their graduations is as important to the business man and salesman and manufacturer today as it is to the railroad engineer, It may not be long before color tests are the rule rather than the exception in many of the manufacturing indus- | tries. This is evidenced by the trend now being taken by retail trade and by the fact that artists and dye experts have been called into consultation by many of the basic industries. been recognized in the textile lines, and it is now regarded as a greater factor in sales than ever before. The looms of, the country today are turning ‘out fabrics with more designs arid more in- tense colorings than ever before. The blending of these colorings is the im- portant factor and none but an expert can achieve the desired effect. Uniformity of Coloring. The necessity for uniformity of color- ing has been deeply impressed on the manufacturers by the return of thou- sands of yards of cloth which showed variations of shade. This has been especially true of the bias type fabrics so extensively used in dress manufac- ture. This emphasis on the uniformity of color in dress is due to the trend to en- semble costumes in which dress, stock- ings, shoes, hats, bags, gloves and other accessories must synchronize or contrast happily. Failure to produce such re- sults has resulted in a tremendous de- mand for white shoes, stockings and gloves, which are being dyed the exact shade desired. As a result the various industries involved in the women's wear fleld are co-operating to stabilize shades. The trend toward stabilization of colorings in automobile decoration and upholstery has been no less marked. “Eye appeal” has been a big sales fac- tor, and its impoytance is growing, ‘The stabilization of color extends even into the agricultural products. Flour to meet®customers’ demands must be of a definite and constant shade of white. [ Corn is judged to some extent on its | coloring. "A strong effort is being made by the big baking and confectionery concerns to stabilize the color of bread. ‘They are endeavoring so to regulate their ovens that every loaf shall have the same shade of brown on top. Crackers, cakes and cookles also afre watched closely for color variations. Candy and Jewelry Lines. Candies depend on their uniformity and beauty of coloring for much of their sales appeal. The same applies to soft drinks, to ice creams and a score of other food products. Fruit is being graded according to color. The trend toward colored cooking and kitchen utensils, the popularity of colored sheets, pillow cases and towels and the mod- ernistic trend of furniture have all emphasized color importance. Jewelers have always judged the fine- ness of gold and the metallic content of copper roughly by the colorings of those metals, while the development of new lacquers and paints, many of which ara designed to be applied by the purchaser rather than by a professional painter, has brought new problems to the paint and varnish manufacturers. The grading of tobacco has always ( been a matter for the eye of a color ex- pert. The tremendous volume of leaf used in the manufacture of cigarettes has put a_premium on the expert able to blend the various purchases of raw material along color lines as well as along those of flavor. Sales .of American goods in Far Eastern markets have been affected by local. conditions; the Department of Commerce reports, although the month- | Iy average has been sustained. Japan's disturbed financial and economic sit- uation caused frequent declines in that market, while fluctuating currency values impeded progress in restocking China’s marts. British Indian manu- facturers found American cotton too high in price and dull business condi- tions elsewhere also curtailed sales. Money to Loan Secured by first deed of trust on real estate.
