SOUTH BEND, Ind., November 12.— Tragedy struck last night in the midst of jollification for the Notre Dame foot ball team returning victorious over Army, when a freight ran into a crowd of fans, killing John Gleason, 20, of Canadaigua, N. Y., and seriously injur- ing four persons. More than 20 others were hurt slightly. Four thousand fans were at the rail- road station awaiting the arrival of the team. During the wait some students dragged a baggage truck across one of the tracks. A half dozen girls climb- ed on it, to join in the cheering of the crowd. A westbound New York Central frieght train struck the baggage truck, tossed the girls into the throng and hurled the truck itself into a group of students. The iron-bound handle of the truck is believed to have crushed Gleason’s skull. The four in serious condition at local hospitals are Mrs. Madeline Van Hoke, 22, South Bend, Ind.; Miss Marjorie Mason, 21, Etna Green, Ind.: Paul Dun- can, i7, La Salle, Ill, and Robert Hur- ley, 17, Friendship, N. Y. Hundreds of fans on the outer edge of the throng were not aware of the accident. A triumphal parade through South Bend to the Notre Dame campus, led by the university band, welcomed the players. Dr. John Roach Straton, who waged a Nation-wide campaign against the pres- idential candidacy of Gov. Smith, in ||| jubilee services at the Calvary Baptist Church yesterday. called Mrs. Mabel Walker Willebrapdt the “Joan of Arc” of the campaign. “Victory was won by the preachers and the God-honoring women of Amer- ica,” he said. “I pay tribute to one of these, the Joan of Arc of the cam- paign—Mabel Walker Willebrandt. I declare the feeling in my own heart when I say there has not been a finer piece of public service performed by any one in modern times than that put across by Mrs. Willebrandt.” He said the next duty of the people was to destroy the Tammany tiger and oust the “flapper mayor” from City Hall. He lauded Col. Theodore Roosevelt, jr., as a worthy candidate to succeed Mayor Walker. LINCOLN PLAY LAUDED. German Opening of Drama Is Re- garded as Noteworthy Success. MEININGEN, Germany, November 12 (#).—Hermann Luedke's drama, “Abraham Lincoln,” was given its first performance last night. The play represents Lincoln as a rus- tic lawyer, who, on his wife’s in- sistence, vainly runs for the United States Senate.
