LATIERIAY SANTS - PLAN COMMONTY Self-Sustaining Project to Be Tried on Two Areas in Missouri. By the Associated Press. INDEPENDENCE, Mo., November 9.— A self-sustaining co-operative commu- nity, built on Christian ideals wherein | all members would share rewards and responsibilities alike, is the vision of Dr. Frederick M. Smith, president of the . Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The gathering to Zion of the members of the church, 102,000 of them scattered over the world. has been called by Presi- dent Smith, who, they believe, is their leader by divine revelation. Zion is Independence and its environs, head- quarters of the church since 1906. Already about 5,000 members of the church live in and about Independence, ‘where the church owns some 3,000 acres of land. An agricultural colony on the stewardship plan already is functioning near Independence, and 11,000 acres of land recently was purchased in Tansy County, in the Ozark Mountain region of Missouri, for another colony. Plan Great Commonwealth, Quietly the church 1s buying land in this vicinity, looking to the day when there will be enough to found a great community with its own industries, its own sources of raw materials, and with the people taking only what they need for themselves and turning the surplus . into the common treasury for the com- mon § Individuals have been coming to In- dependence for several years to settle at the “center place” of the church. They buy land on easy terms from the church. Outlying colonies, such as is to be established on the land in Taney County, would supply the industries of the central community with raw mate- rials and the people with food. On the Taney County land it is planned to begin at once the raising of sheep and cattle to provide food, wool and leather. The church was organized in Fayette, N. Y., in 1830, with a few members. It grew rapidly and a colony was estab- lished in Kirtland, Ohio. In 1831 a group of the church pio- neers moved to Independence, but two years later a mob formed and ordered the “Saints” to leave. Driven From Missouri. Later they went to Caldwell County, Mo., where land was set aside for them, but there, too, they met persecution. in 1938 there were riots, in which many were killed, and Joseph and Hiram Smith were condemned to death. The execution order was not carried out, however, and the Smiths and the surviving colonists went to Quincy, IIL, later moving to Commerce, now Nau- | voo. L. Joseph and Hiram Smith were slain when they went to Carthage to an- swer charges in connection with de- struction of a newpaper plant. In 1847, Brigham Young and six other members of the quorum, church texts say, broke away and with a group of followers went to Salt Lake City, where the Mormon Church was founded. The second Joseph Smith assumed the presidency in 1860, when the church became the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served until his death, in 1914, when the lead- ership was taken up by his son, Fred- erick M. Smith, now president. ‘Texts of the Reorganized Church em- phasize that it never has adhered to the beliefs of the Salt Lake City Church anc | never has sanctioned polygamy. !
