FILIPINS ADIOURN LEGISLATIE BODY Session Featured by Number of Franchises Granted for Economic Development. By the Assoclsted Press. . MANILA, November 9.—The Philip- pine Legislature adjourned sine die to- day, ending a session featured by the Number of franchises granted for the economic development of the islands. Franchises approved included grants to the Mackay Radio & Telegraph Co. and the Dollar Steamship Line to oper- ate transpacific wireless plants on the islands and to the Philippine Telephone & Telegraph Co. to establish a long- distance system. ‘The legislative committees of both houses were given authority to revise the group of amendments recently pass- ed liberalizing the corporation laws of the islands. The committees will re- ceive suggestions along this line from Gov. Gen. Stimson. An extra session of the Senate prob- ably will be called Monday or Tuesday to consider government appointments. A special session of both houses is ex- pected next February to deal with anti- trust legislation to supplement the cor- poration laws, to consider the develop- ment of Mindanao Island and take up the appointment of resident commis- sioners. The legislative body adjourned with- out taking action on a bill which would blished the insular board of control, which the late Gov. Gen. Teonard Wood abolished and which the United States Supreme Court de- clared to be an illegal body. The affairs of the government-owned corporations therefore will be left solely in the hands of Gov, Gen. Stimson. WHIG AND CLIO HALLS MERGED BY PRINCETON Waning of Forensic Interest Given as Reason for Consolidation of 0ld Societies. By the Associated Press. PRINCETON, N. J, November 9.— Whig and Clio Halls, the two oldest college literary socities in the United States, were merged formally into one organization yesterday after the ap- proval of the Princeton student body and alumni had been obtained. In the future all forensic activity on the Princeton campus will center around ‘Whig Hall, and Clio Hall will be loaned to the administration as a university center. Lack of interest in debating is the chief reason for the disuse into which the two halls have fallen in recent years. Clio Hall was founded in 1765 and Whig four years later. During their long history they have included many famous Princeton undergraduates in their membership. Both James Madison and Woodrow Wilson, Princeton’s two Presidents of the country, were active %n the work of Whig Hall while in col- ege. Facsimile Radio May Bolster China Telegraphy System By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, November 9-— Some day, in the belief of David Sarnoff, vice president of the Radio Corporation of America, telegraphy in China will perhaps be as easy as in Western nations. Radio stations which the cor- poration is to build for the Na- tionalist government will be equipped so facsimile devices can be attached when facsimile transmission comes into general use.
