Pomeroy, vice chairman of the Repub- lican national ‘committee and New Jer- sey national committeeman, commenting on that phase of Gov. Smith's Baltimore speech’ in which he called attention to a meeting of the Ku Klux Klan “in conjunction with the Republican Na- tlonal committee,” yesterday issued the following statement: “The situation referred to by Gov. Smith in his speech last night was a deliberately laid plot by individuals misrepresenting themselves. By the Assoclated Press. ETHEL, Miss., October 31.—Five men were killed and & heavy steam boller was hurled 200 yards into a store build- ing here yesterday, when the boller ex- ploded at the O. E. McDanlel planing mill. Apparently out of water, the steam |- box on the mill's engine cracked open with a mighty roar, destroyed the build- ing in which it was located and sailed through space into Askin’s store, across the road, demolishing that structure and damaging the post office next door with small bits of steel and wood. WHITE HITS SMITH AS TAMMANY’S MAN Kansas Editor Predicts Hoover's Election—Would Be Spiritual Leader. By the Assoclated Press. GREENEVILLE, Tenn., October 31.— Contrasting the two major presidential nominees before an audience here last night, Willlam Allen White, Emporia, Kans,, editor, predicted Herbert Hoo- ver's election and expressed an opinion that he will enter the White House as “the spiritugl leader of the people as well as their President.” Mr. White declared Hoover to be a man trained outside of politics, but with an American background. Gov. Smith, he said, is of Tammany train- ing and background. The speaker ad- mitted he believed both candidates to be honest and courageous men, how- ever. He asserted that Tammany rulers “are the masters of the people, and with this idea Gov. Smith is imbued.” rammany, he added, and not the Demo- cratic party, had nominated Smith at Houston. The prohibition record of Smith as Governor_of New York was attacked, the speaker representing the Demo- cratic nominee as one who would “deck Uncle Sam with a bar keeper’s apron.” COMES OUT FOR SMITH.
