Tax collections in the District during October indicate a new record will be set, according to Tax Collector Chatham ‘Towers. According to Towers’ figures, $7,513,~ 188.58 has been collected in the first 25 days of the month, and if collections continue at the present rate the col- lections will exceed $7.700,000. The previous record collection was in Oc- tober, 1927, when $7,270.860.48 passed through the busy cashiers’ cages in the office. September was also the best Septem- ber in history, $4,356,434.44 being taken. On the basis of the present collec- tions, Mr. Towers estimates that the tax collections for the current fiscal year will probably exceed $34,000,000. The collections during the fiscal year ;X\dt‘d June 30 amounted to $32,512,- 71.97. ‘The substantial majority of the taxes | come in from the levy on real and per- | sonal property, which is taxed at a rate of $1.70 per $100 assessed value. The assessed value is supposed to rep- resent 100 per cent of the sale value. October is a busy month for the tax collectors because the first installment of the real estate taxes must be paid by September 30. Every year thousands | of taxpayers send in their money at the last moment, and although the money is physically preseft in the tax collector’s office, it cannot be credited on the ledgers until October is several days old. WILL HOLD DANCE. Tomorrow Evening. A dance and card party will be held tomorrow evening by employes of King's Palace, at the Chestnut Farms Audi- torium, Twentieth street and Penn- sylvania avenue. CANADIAN WORKER GRANTED INJUNCTION Justice Peyton Gordon. of the Dis- trict Supreme Court yesterday signed a temporary injunction against James J. Davis, Secretary of Labor, and Harry E. Hull, commissioner general of immi- gration, restraining them from denying entry into the United States of John Graber, a resident of Niagara Falls, Ontario, who is employed on the Amer- ican side of the border. The officials, relying on General Order No. 86, which defines persons living in Canada and commuting to work across the border as immigrants, had refused to allow Garber to cross the international bridge. ‘Whiie the injunction applies only to Garber, it is stated by Attorneys Ring & Cobb, representing the petitioner. that it is a test case on which depends several hundred cases involving other workmen who have been excluded by the general order, aithough the Circuit Court of Appeals held the order invalid and the United States Supreme Court refused to review the decision.
