BLUE MURDER Thrilling Story of a Young Secret Service Man's Battle With Crime and Rescue of Girl in Peril. (Continued from Yesterday's Star.) INSTALLMENT XXIV. IS trip to Italy by air was a memorable one for Richard Haye. Aroused from his slum- bers by Jarrent at 6 on a bleak Winter’s morning, “His teeth chattered all the tifhe he was dressing —and the chattering was not entirely due to cold! Taverner, brisk, alert, changed mira- culously in a night from one upon whom the advancing years rested heavily tp an active, middle-aged man, hurried him mercilessly through his breakfast in the electrically lit dining room. Long before Haye had finished he was at the window, viewing the ap- proaching day. “Jove, Dick!” he called across pres- ently; “it's going to be fine=—a crisp, clear December day. We shall be well w!r-'x:peu up and you'll enjoy every inch of it." The other murmured something in- articulate in response. He was by no means certain of being thrilled, at least not in the sense Ta- verner implied. If there was one sentence he regretted at that moment, it was the one he had uttered in the drawing room on the previous night when he had believed the prospect of fiying to be remote. Moral cowardice was the only thing that prevented him from confessing his fear and backing out of it. He felt like a man con- victed of homicide consuming his last meal on earth. . Climbing into the fuselage of a great, sprawling miracle of modern science after Hodges had driven them to Croy- don, with the ground still white with frost and officials with upturned coat- collars in the background, he felt that he was mounting to the scaffold! The journey was accomplished in three stages, with brief stops at Paris and Dijon. They landed finally, and to Haye's intense rellef, on the night- enshrouded flying-ground .at Genoa and & little later, a special car was whirling them at breakneck speed through Nervi ‘Throughout the entire flight he had scarcely uttered a word. Fear, genuine, livid fear, had given way. to wonder- ment long before the French capital had been reached.. Between Paris and Dijon he was almost enjoying himself; during the third stage, with certain un- expressed mental reservations, he felt himself to be an accomplished aeronaut. Now that the thing had been thrust upon him, he was glad. What an astounding adventure to relate to his friends in Rome! The thought of the envy with which he would be regarded AUCTION SALES.
