Nine years ago, though belonging to another denomination, he was led to offer his services to the pastor, Rev. Dr. Andrew Reid Bird, to supply his pulpit without any remuner- ation if he would undertake the launch- ing of this movement. Dr. Bird and the parishioners, in selecting CI Frazier to lay the corner stonc acknowledging their appreciation for h.s | effective aid. | This project to erect the church was | heartily commended by the General As- semblies of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, meeting in Char- lotte, N. C., in 1920, in St. Louis, Mo., in 1921, and in Charleston, W. Va., in 1923. The interest in this movement has gradually grown until a well equipped church is now being built at | & cost of over $300,000. In accordance with plans adopted by the assembly’s committee on this work, all the pews and seats in the church will be inscribed as being presented by churches ail over the country, particu- larly throughout the South. The names of all who contributed are to be placed in the corner stone. The structure is being built of Rockwood, Ala., lime- stone. The architects have designed an edifice after a modified early English gothic. Pending the completion of the new church building the congregation is worshiping each Sunday morning at 11 o'clock in the garden room of the Mayflower Hotel. The evening service’ and all other activities of the church are .being carried on at the chapel at 2204 Q street. WOMEN’S ORGANIZATIONS PLAN JOINT MEETING Gettysburg League and Missionary Union Will Convene on Friday, October 12. A joint meeting of the Washington Woman's Gettysburg League and of the ‘Washington Women’s Missionary Union will be held Friday, October 12, at St. Paul's English Lutheran Church, Elev- enth and H streets. The Gettysburg League will convene at 10:30 a.m. and the Women's Missionary Union at 2 pam. The devotional service will be conducted by Rev. Dr. John T. Huddle. An inspirational program_ will be given, with echoes from the sixth bi- ennial convefition of the Women’s Mis- sionary Society of the United Lutheran Church in America, which was held at Johnstown, Pa., September 22 to 28. Dr. John C. Copenhaver was assigned to the pastorate of Epworth Church, to take charge next week. Dr. Copenhaver is a graduate of Randolph- Macon College, and has served in a number of important charges in this conference, At one Re served in what is now Francis Askw9 M. E. Church South in Mount_Pl-zeant, after which he was | sent to Baltimore and Roanoke, from which charge he comes to Epworth. He was recently elected a trustee of the Randolph-Macon system, after which he had conferred to him the degree of doctor of divinity. In addition to his other connections, he is president of the Baltimore Con- ference board of church extension. Dr. John Paul Tyler, whose appointment to Clifton Forge, Va., was made at the same time, leaves Epworth after nine |and_one-half years as pastor, during which time he has had a very success- ful pastorate, A new modern church has been built at a cost of more than $200,000, which is entirely free of debt.
