Market 'Rea:hes Record High Mark—Wheat Also Gains. CHICAGO, October 6 (#).—Much of | today’s buying of wheat here was on the part of traders who have been con- spicuous of late on the selling side of the market. Aside from assertions widely circulated that on the basis of growers’ costs, domestic wheat, South- west and Northwest, is netting below 1893 values, friends of higher prices were urging today that threshing re- turns in Montana and North Dakota ! have been less than was estimated, and | that Winnipeg, plus the carrying charge | to December, is higher than wheat in | the United States. March and May corn today reached new high record prices for the ason, but the corn market, as a whole, showed at times a tendency to subside. In some quarters it was contended that buying had been overdone, and that recent sharp gains in price had discounted many bullish features. 1In this connection it was pointed out that five States east of Chicago have nearly 85,000,000 bushels more corn this season than a year ago. BY WILLIAM F. HEFFERNAN. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, October 6.—Sharp up- ward movements in specialty favorites were again recorded at the close of the week on the Curb Exchange. Trading continued at an active pace, with no apparent weakness in any quarter. One of the outstanding features was Columbia Graphophone, which_ opened | on a block of 7,200 shares at 1047, & new high record, and subsequently crossed 108, as compared with the pre- vious final of 1017,. The strength was based on merger rumors and the pros pect of early listing on the Stock E: change. Balaban & Katz, which already fig- ures prominently in the theatrical mer- ger talk, went to a new high above 101. Others that reached their best included A. G. Spalding, up 7 points to 0, Schulte Real Estate, up a point to 46, on reports of greatly increased earnings; Consolidated Automatic Merchandising following announcement of the placing of the cumulative convertible on a per- manent 7 per cent dividend basis, and Campbell, Wyant & Canon up 6 points to_73 B for the recent strength of Grigsby-Grunow was found in the an- nouncement today that a special meet- ing of stockholders has been called to authorize an increase in the stock from 100,000 to 500,000 shares of no par. Di- rectors of Safeway Stores, Inc., also called a special meeting of the stock- holders for the purposes of increasing the authorized common to 1,500,000 shares from the prusem 150, 000 shares. COTTON CLOSES S STEADY. Market Drops 4 to 12 Points on Selling Movement. NEW YORK, October 6 (#).—The cot- ton market opened steady at an ad- vance of 1 point to a decline of 2 points and eased off a few points dur- ing the early trading under Southern selling and liquidation, which may have been influenced by relatively easy Liver- pool cables and reports of fairly good weather in the South. There was further covering and trade buying at the decline, which extended to 18.75 for December and 18.56 for March, or about 4 to 7 points net lower, but the mar- ket later was quiet within a point or two of the lowest. Private cables said there had been hedge selling and liquidation in Liver- pool with offerings there absorbed by trade calling on the decline. The amount of cotton on shipboard await- ing clearance at the end of the week was estimated at 97,000 bales, against 137,000 last year. Futures closed steady, 4 to 12 poin lower.
