RODSEVELT DENES [ e “SACRIFICE" STORY Says He Was Drafted Be- cause of Smith Sympathy. Hits at “Slander.” By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, October 5—Franklin D. Roosevelt has denied he was “dra-) gooned” by Gov. Smith into accepting the Democratic nomination for Gover- nor of New York. In a statement telephoned from twarm Springs, Ga., to the Democratic national headquarters, Mr. Roosevelt sald: “I am amazed to hear that efforts are being made to make it appear that I have been ‘sacrficed by Gov. Smith to further his own election’ and that my personal friends should vote against me to prevent such sacrifice.” “Let me set this matter straight at once. I was not dragooned into running by the governor. On the con- trary, he fully appreciated the reasons for my reluctance and was_willing to give up such advantage as he felt my candidacy might bring him, in defer- ence to my wishes. “Smith Policies Mine.” “I was drafted because all of lh9< party leaders when they assembled in- sisted that my often expressed belmt in the policies of Gov. Smith made | my nomination the best assurance to‘ the voters that these policies would | be continued. * * * I trust this state- | ment will eliminate this particular bn\ of nonsense from the campaign from the very beginning.” SCORES BIGOTRY. COLUMBUS, Ga., October 5—Re- suming his speaking tour on behalf of the national Democratic ticket, Franklin D. Roosevelt, new Democratic nominee for Governor of NeW York, last night struck agli.n at “vile and scurri'gus literature,” which he said | was srompted by religious bigotry. | Declaring that the nomination of a Catholic by a major political party has | made this campaign one of the most | important in national life, Mr. Roose- | velt said & handful of unthinking citi- | vens have reverted to the sixteenth and seventeenth century prejudices. “No sane person would think for a New Green New Blue New Reds Navy Black moment that the Republican candidates or their managers have the slightest connection with this foulness, yet two | facts remain,” Mr. Roosevelt declared. | “First, somebody is paying out hun- dreds of thousands of dollars for the printing and distribution of this liter- ature, and, second, we cannot escape the fact that the Republican candi- dates stand to benefit to some extent by the ignorant, bigoted vote. This they cannot_escape.” Mr. Roosevelt asked his hearers at the Opera House whether the farmer had received any benefits from the Re- publican administrations of the past eight years. He declared that 1,000 farms are abandoned daily throughout the United States, and declared that the Democratic party has a better rec- ord for carrying out pledges than the Republican, and gave hope for a re- birth of the farm life of the Nation. Gov. Smith, he said, was the key to its accomplishment. CABINET CHANGES SEEN IN SPANISH REGIME Report of Shifts Follow Stories of Dissension Over Rule of Pre- mier Primo de Rivera.
