. TINANCIATL - CONVERTIBLE BOND GROUP IN DEMAND Seaboard Air Line Issues Stage Sharp Recavery; U. S. Notes More Active. b e BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. pecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, October 5.—Another forward movement in the industrial con- vertible bond group and a sharp re- covery in Seaboard Air Line issues were the two features of today's market. Stimulated by the sirength in stocks, Barnsdall 6s advanced another 213 points and Andes Copper 7s over 4 points. Anaconda Copper 75 gained 114 points. Dodge 6s were slightly re- actionary. Pressed Steel 55 joined the convertible group with a sharp and heavy deal- ings between' 89 and 102%;. The rise in Seaboard Air Line junior 4ssues and in the 6 per cent bonds cov- ering the Florida property was ac- companied by more than usual activit: ‘The adjustments. which sold at a ne: low of 40 a few days ago, were up 134 points. The refunding 4’}s. which were 5914 at the end of last week, gained 31, points. ‘The Consolidation 6s rose 2'; points @nd were 6 points higher than a week | st_advance was in the | Al-Florida 6s, with the series B bonds | up 5 points and the series A over 2| ago. The lar points. ‘There was nothing new in the Tailroad situation, but evidently the in- terests identified with the property are giving its bonds some support. | ‘The $25,000.000 issue of Missouri Pa- cific refunding 5s is the largest railroad offering in some time and was sold -1 point under the price at which bonds | of the same mortgage were quoted yes. terday. An industrial issue of $5,150,- 000 5 per cent debentures and an- other of $5,000.000 public utility 512 per ! cent debentures lifted the total day's offering to the highest figure in two weeks. There was somewhat more activity in the United States Government group in anticipation of the new notes, whose terms will probably be announced shortly. Both high-grade rails and | public utilities were stagnant. Every- | where there is a complaint among bond dealers that they cannot interest their clients as long as stock speculation con- sumes so_large a portion of public in- terest and of capital. COTTON PRICES DROP IN EARLY TRADING Market Opens Steady—Declines Follow Southern Selling Movement. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 5.—The cotton market opened steady at a decline of 2 to 8 points, under Southern selling | and liquidation, promoted by a favor-| able view of the weather news and the | rather easy showing of Liverpool. ‘There was some trade buying and | covering at the decline, which caused rallies of a few points right after the call, but the demand was not active nd’ prices soon sagged off again. De- | cember sold down to 18.88 and March | to 1870, with the market showing net | declines of about 5 to 8 points at the end of the first half hour. There was a fair volume of business at the start, | but trading later was quiet, much of it being attributed to further evening- up in preparation for the Government | crop report of Monday. A private re- port issued today placed the crop indi- cation at from 14.200,000 to 14,700,000 bales, compared with a range of 14,500, Private cables reported a dull market | in Liverpool, but a fair turnover in cot- | ton cloths for India and the continent. Another private crop report made its | appearance during the middle of the| morning, placing the condition at 54.1| and the indicated yield at 13,827,000 | bales. These figures failed to stimulate | buying, however, and the market was rather easier during the middle of the day under further realizing or liquida- | tion. December sold off to 18.84 and | March to 18.68, or about 9 to 11 points net lower, and the market was within a point or two of these figures at mid- day. The average of crop estimates by 86 members of the New York Cotton Exchange is 14,150,000 bales, accord- ing 1o a canvass made this morning, the highest individual estimate being 14,- 850,000 and the lowest 13,750,000, CORN PRICES REACH NEW SEASON LEVEL Scanty Shipments Reported Western Markets—Wheat Starts Higher. in By the Associated Pri CHICAGO, October 5.—In brisk trading, corn ran up today to above season high-price records established hardly 24 hours before. Arrivals of corn in Western markets were reported scant, with demand un- usually urgent. Opening at l4al{ cents advance, corn later showed ma- | terial further gains. Wheat started 1,a7 cent higher, but subsequently re- acted. Oats were firm. Provisions also | had an upward trend. With various important market cen- ters in the West reporting inability to| find any old corn in their territory, Ohd with old corn being shipped back | West from here, sellers of corn future | deliveries found themselves at a decid- | ed disadvantage much of the time to-| day. In this connection, it was pointed | out as significant that feeders were taking new corn at prices much above | terminal market bids. Wheat gave evidence of sympathy with corn_market strength today, but failed to hold gains well in the face of rain reports from India, where pre- | viously drought has been so_ severe that wells and rivers throughout a large part of the country were dry- ing up. On the other hand, Canadian advices today told of frost damage be- coming more apparent as later fields are threshed, damage to quality and also 1o yields being greater than was | looked for. —and REALT I i i | Symbol of the richness, it makes Warm enough for | Let our experts you.
