SNITH IS ACCLSED | OF SURRNG Y Colladay, at Rally, Calls on Governor to Retract D. C. Police Charges. In a speech delivered last night at a rally, conducted by the Hoover and Curtis Club of the District, at the Wil- lard Hotel, Edward F. Colladay, Re- publican national committeeman for the District of Columbia, publicly called upon John F. Costello, Democratic na- tional committeeman for the District, to wire Gov. Smith for an immediate re- traction of the false charges he recently made about the number of police of this city being tried for intoxication. The Republican national committee- man cited Gov. Smith’s charge in his Milwaukee speech that one-third of the | Washington police force had been tried during the past year on charges of in: toxication. Mr. Colladay declared that such a statement was not only. untruth- ful, but was proof Gov. Smith's irre- eponsibility in the matter of seeking | votes. ~He said also that “lies” about | the Washington police were & siur on the National Capital. Demands Retraction. Mr. Colladay in his demand for a re- #raction pointed out that the records of the Police Department show that in- stead of a third of the force of 1,375 policemen being tried for intoxication there were only 39. “Gov. Smith could have obtained these accurate figures,” Mr. Colladay said, “if he had desired 1o be correctly informed bsfore making rash and false slurs.” Gov. Smith’s statement about illicit liquor traffic in the Capital City and the number of policemen here tried for intoxication also came in for criticism from John H. Bartlett, First Assistant Postmaster General, another speaker at the rally. “While Gov. Smith's unfair charge about the police of the Capital is not a vital issue in the National campaign,” Mr. Bartlett stated, “it is highly im- portant because it indicates clearly to the electorate the recklessness igno- rance and unfairness of the Democratic nominec in the matter of appealing for votes. Gov. Smith thus far has shown clearly that he has little regard for truth or accuracy. His carelessness and irresponsibility are apparent now. 500 Attend. More than 500 men and women at- tended the rally. The meeting was opened by John Lewis Smith, president of the Hoover and Curtis Club, who outlined the purposes and work of the club, saying it was directing its activ- ities principally to the financing of the campaign in Washington and to getting out the voters of various States who are temporarily resident here. Edgar C. Snyder, United States mar- shal of the District, as chairman of the committee on meetings and rallies of the Republican campaign committee of the District, introduced the speakers. In his speech of welcome, Mr. Snyder lauded the work being done here among the State voters by the Republican State committee under the leadership of Samuel J. Prescott, its chairman, and the work of A. E. Chaffee, in charge of the voters’ information bureau at local headquarters. Others who spoke weré Mrs. W. D. Cameron, Republican national commit- teewoman from Nebraska, and Mrs. W. C. Reed, Republican national commit- teewoman from New Mexico. Former Senator Ernst, Republican national committeeman from Kentucky, occupied @ seat on the plaform. SHIPPING NEWS Arrivals at and Sailings From New York. ARRIVED YESTERDAY.
