George Washington Post, No. 1, Americun Legion, wnight will celebrate its ninth birthday anniversary with a meeting at the post headquarters, 1829 I street, to which all Legionnaires have been invited. Among the distinguished speakers. will be C. S. Robbins, Assistant Sccretary of War; Frank T. Hines, director of the Veterans' Bureau, and Maj. Gen. Amos J. Fries, chief of the Chemical Warfare Service. There will be music by an orchestra with vocal selections by members of the U. S. S. Jacob Jones Post, No. 2. Members claim that the celebration will virtually be not only for the found- ing of the one post, but of the Ameri- can Legion in America. Nine years ago today, it was recalled, | the post was organized by a few Wash- ington veterans who had reached home after the armistice in advance of the mass return of the A. E. F, The credit of having taken the initiative of ths movement in America has been given to Col. E. Lester Jones, director of the Coast and Geodetic Survey. The Ameri. | can Legion now numbers 750,000 vet- erans. This post was called originajly, the Gen. Pershing Post, No. 1, but later when at the first national meeting of the Legion, it was ruled that no post | should be named for a living person, the name George Washington Post, No. 1 was substituted. There is some ques- | tion as to whether its organization pre- ceded that of Paris, France—although Col. Jones has the documents to prove that it did—but there is no dispute as to its being the starter of the Legion in America. Women are invited, d after the | speaking there will be dancing and re- freshments. Legionnaires from other posts are especially urged to be present. A feature of special interest is the fact that tonight marks the last ti 4 general meeting can be held in t! | building, which has recently been sold. This is the only post in Washington which has owned its headquarters, and it is explained since the sale brings several thousand dollars net profit into the treasury, it will enable the post to | purchase even more suitable headquar- ters in a less costly neighborhood. — Want Avenue Eliminated. Elimination of Wyoming avenue be- | tween T street, in Burleith, to Nebraska |avenue, a distance of about 1 mile, from the highway plan of the District was recommended to the District of Columbia Commissioners yesterday by the co-ordinating committee of the National Capital Park and Planning Commission. The greater part of this highway involved in the elimination project lies within the Glover Parkway, it was said. The committee also de- cided to recommend to the Commis- sioners that Foxhall road between Cathedral and Nebraska avenues be wldene:l t0 120 feet, the distance being locks. —_—— Wife Accuses Husband.
