Correspondence of the Associated Press. MADISON, Wis.—From the work- shops of the agricultural college of the University of Wisconsin has come a newly-invented power corn drier. doing in 72 hours the work that once required weeks or months. The drier makes its bow to com mercial use at a time when farmers of the corn belt are facing a very serious problem in the search for go0od seed corn. The late, wet season, expected to end with killing fre before vast quantities of corp mature, makes it necessary for many farmers to dry their seed artificially. Four Are in Use. Four of the new automatic driers, all built this year, now are in use in Wisconsin. ~ They are owned by seedmen. While the drier is con- ructed at present on a small scale. there is a probability that farmers will organize co-operative groups tu install the machinery for neighbo: hood use. It is said the equipment can be operated economically by steam, gas or electric power. The automatic drier has the appear- ance of an ordinary covered and tightly-sealed grain bin. The entire boxlike structure is sectioned inte four inner bins of equal size, two bin on either side of a narrow eent duct through which air, heated frc 90 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit, is forced by a blower. Each bin has a slatted bottom, rising 12 inches from the floor to allow free circulation of the warm air ap through the corn and out vents at the top. Uniform Drying. To insure uniform drying, the pro: ss may be reversed and a currer forced from the warm air duct through vents at the inner top of the bin, down through the corn, and released. moisture-laden, from outer vents at the bottom. It is said the drier is capable, within 72 hours’ time. of reducing to a safe 12 or 13 per gent the 45 per cent moisture content frequently found in corn this year, if the husked ears are piled to a depth not greatly exceeding five feet and the air current alternated every 24 to 26 hours. ___LEGAL NOTICES.
