OSIAH WINSLOW-—soldier, poet, statesman—was a Puritan who had the pluck and the genius to outgrow Puritanism. He was born in Plymouth, Mass., at a time when the little Pilgrim .colony was still fighting starvation and Indians. His father was for a time Governor of Massachusetts and one of the great men in that stern colony In Massachusetts then there were scant chances for education and still fewer for culture. Yet young Winslow early won the title, “Most Accomplished Gen- tleman in New England,” and on his visit to London charmed and amazed the British court by his learning and accomplished manners. While still a youth he took up military work and amassed fame as a daring Indian fighter. In 1659 he was made commander of the colony’s troops. Next, turning to civic life, he rose to the rank of assistant governor, and in 1672 was chosen Governor of Massachusetts. Here his real career be- gan. WITH TOMAHAWK AND TORCH. ilth st n. At last, on December 19, 1675, he met the savages in a terrific battle. There, once and for all, Winslow crushed his foes. The colony was henceforth safe from them Barely had peace been declared when Winslow was again hard at work arranging for the prote of the Indians’ rights at the hands of the settle Arriving on quieter times, Winslow brol another Puritan tradition. He cast aside the stiff discomfort of the Pllgrims and embarked on a course of hospitable luxury in his Marshfleld mansion. There he li state, still holding the title of Governor of Ma setts until his death. After a busy life, whose h and advancement had been those of his beloved colony as well, Winslow had but a few years left to enjoy ease and wealth. For he died in 1680, when only 51. He drew down upon himself a storm of abuse by refusing utterly to authorize such persecu tions. His example paved the way for saner, milder religious laws. 'he Puritans had not always treated the Indians fairly. In consequence, native conspiracies had sprung up against the settlers. The Indian sachem, Massascit had been the colonists’ friend, but his eldest son, Alex ander, plotted to destroy the white men. It was due to Winslow’s courage and promptitude that these plots failed. He marched upon the conspirators and madc Alexander his prisoner. This was in 1662, before Win slow became governor. After taking office as governor he would not allow the Indians to be defrauded, but guarded their rights as jealously as those of his own people. He won the friendship of many of the tribes, and some New En- landers sharply criticized his gentleness toward the savages. With tomahawk and torch the Indians launched themselves upon the unprotected villages of western Massachusetts. Towns were burned, women and chil- dren murdered, men put to death by fearful tortures Then it was that Winslow showed “the iron hand heneath the velvet glove.” He was appointed general in chief of the United Colonies, and began a whirlwind apaign against the redskins.
