NEW YORK, October 18.—Resump- tion of trading on the Stock Exchange today was marked, first, by heavy sell- ing for both accounts; second, by an jrregular recovery, which in many cases wiped out all the early losses. and, third, by a period of nervous un- settiement. In all these respects the market was i mcting according to its own precedent. Il The weakness of Monday, uniform as it was throughout the list, created enough doubt in the minds of specu- 1 'lators to cause a somewhat hasty un- loading of long stock in the first hour today. Likewise it encouraged opera- ! tions for the decline on the part of those who always looking for the major downward movement so often predicted and so long delayed. But the early selling checked as stocks showed resistance and the new bear account was hurriedly closed out. ¥ selling has met with such +d for the past year or So inclined to that side are ‘ned. These preliminary wut of the way, the mar- ket was it to find its cwn way and with uncertain result. Motors Are Indecisive. The indecision was especially notice- able in the motor shares. General Motors which had broken yesterday, was fractionally lower at the start to- and then rallied, but meeting stock advance. Hudson was strong e, reflecting the large short interest in that stock. Mature con- sideration of the somewhat fantastic suggestion advanced by a statistical jureau that Henry Ford could sell, a miliion new cars at a loss of $100 each and still not make any great | Smpression on his cash assets elimi- | mated that idea as a market factor. ! ““That is not Mr. Ford's way of doing | Rhings. Steel and General Electric were per- ,: sistently sold even after the rest of khe market bad rallied. For the pres- gure on the first-named trade condi- | tions might have been the explanation, and for the general liquidation in | <eneral Electric its low yigld might | Save been advancea as the reason were it not for the fact that these 1wo conditions have existed a long time without any influence on either t" pf these stocks. International Tele- vhone & Telegraph was a sensitive I, member of the utility group and North . American was another, but the losses “§n both were comparatively slight. { Rail Shares Supported. Railroad shares met better support ks a class than did the industrials. JErie weakened for a time and Dela- {3iare & Hudson s01d off, but most of { the seasoned dividend payers were in ‘ good demand at current levels. Buyers were not willing to bid up for the rails ‘but they were ready to accept offer- jlngs. { Minor movements included a sharp irally in U. S. Rubber in spite of the strength in the commodity market and khort covering in some of the sugars where the selling had_evidently been !overdone. Remington Rand was weak »gain at a new low for the year, just mbove 25. Houston Oil and General Asphalt were supported by their repre- entative pools. The market hardened in the after- jnoon after call money, which had renewed at 43 per cent dropped to 4 "FINANCIA 4 NEW Abitibi Pow (5). Abrahm&Straus Abr&Stras 7%pt Alr Reductn(17) Ajax Rubber. C., TUESDAY, TRADING I3 BRISK INMARKET TODAY Eggs and Butter Prices Are Reported Firm—Poultry Demand Good. Cooler weather has put additional life in the meat market. Dealers re- ported a splendid week end market and fairly brisk trading this morning. Sales usually are greater about the first and middle of the month, Gov- ernment paydays, according to dealers. Dealers always experience a great- er demand Tor pork and pork products when the weather gets cooler, it is stated, one reason given being that mers increase their use of cab- bage, sauerkraut and green vegetables requiring the use of pork for sea- soning. Butter dealers reported a slightly firmer condition of that market this morning. A fraction of a cent in- crease in the larger butter centers was reported, but wholesale prices here were not increased. A continued firm condition of the egg market was reported. FKirst qual- ity eggs continue scarce, dealers re- port, and consumers willingly pay a premium for such stock. Poultry was in fairly good demand this morning. Fruit and vegetable dealers had at- active displays of products from which retailers selected supplies, and were what dealers termed reasonable or cheap. Today's Wholesale Prices. MARYLAND MUNICIPAL AND CITY BONDS SCARCE Special Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, October 18.—Local in- vestment bankers report a great scarcity of Maryland State and mu- nicipal securities at present. There are no new local issues advertised for sale, and dealers here report that prac- tically all bonds offered in the past have been absorbed by the public. Prices brought by Baltimore City issues on the local market are high {at present, with few transactions re-| ported, showing that the bulk of this | type of investment has been put away. Local dealers are bidding for State and municipal bonds outside of Mary- land in order to supply the demand | which they report exists here at pres |ent for this type of securty. VIRGINIA BROKER FIRM CLAIMS BANKRUPTCY Cobb Bros, Old Norfolk House, | Files Involuntary Petition—Com- modity Trade Blamed. By the Associated Press. NORFOLK. Va., October 18.—Cobb Brothers & Co., one of the oldest stock brokerage concerns in this section of the country, yesterday filed a petition in involuntary bankruptcy in Federal Court here. No schedule of assets or labilities was filed and none of the attorneys or petitioners could give an idea of the amount involved. The creditors are said, however, to be numerous., They are chiefly in east- ern Virginia and North Carolina. The firm has dealt in stocks, bonds, cotton, grain and provisions for 30 years and is a member of the New York and Norfolk cotton exchanges. Charles C. Cobb, one of the partners, said he had no statement to make, but the other member, James B. McCaw, issued a formal statement saying: “Recent transactions in cotton and grain aggregating a large amount are the cause of present condition. This condition was hoth unknown and un- authorized by me.” NEW YORK MARKETS. NEW YORK, October 18 (#).—Rye firm; No. 2 western 109% f. 0. b. New York, and 107% c. i. f. export.
