30 AFGHANISTAN AMIR ~TOVISIT ENGLAND London Aflutter Over Social and Political Aspects of Event. By the Associated Press. LONDON, October 18.—British offi- clals charged with the delicate task of entertaining foreign potentates are all aflutter over the forthcoming State visit to London of Kiig Aman- ullah Kahn, Amir of Afghanistan. The Ruler's visit is fraught with both political and social problems, and every precaution is bein tc make the Amir's stay a Dleasant one. The only other royal personage from that wild mountainous in Central Asie who ever saw sights of London was Prince Naz- rullah, brother of the fuler at thai time. He came to London 35 vears ago and those Londoners who remem- ber the occaston still talk about it. Leads Merry Chase. Prince Nazrullah mixed the odd customs of Oriental courts with the amenities of Western civilization, and he led the young bloods of London a merry chase. He and his colorful entourage lived at Dorchester House, one of the most palatial mansions in London. There the Afghans killed their sheep, roasted their oxen and prepared great Orlental feasts, that made the whole fashionable Park Lane district reck with the pungent odors of Afghan cookery. When the visit ended Dor- chester House was a sorry sight. It was put In order again and later became famous as the United States embassy when the late Whitelaw Reid was Ambassador to the court of St. James. § Prince Nazullah had a gay time in London and then went back to the snows of Kabul and became violently anti-British. 3 The visit of the present Amir, ex- pected in December, will be of a differ- ent character, however, and it is hoped thet it will have a different result. Amanullah will be the guest of King George and Queen Mary at Bucking- ham Palace for three days, and as the main purpose of his European tour is to observe Western civiliza , an ef- fort will be made to show him Great Britain at its best. Only 36 Years Old. The King is 36 years old, of clean- cut appearance and serious minded. He wears his fez at a jaunty angle and his mustache is as aggressive as that of Mustapha Kemal. Although Afghanistan is one of the most isolated nations in the world, it has great political importance to Great Britain as a buffer state between the Indian empire and Soviet Russia. Af- ghanistan is also rich in undeveloped natural resources and half a dozen nations are engaged in a scramble for the chance to develop them. This lat- ter factor adds considerable interest to Amanullah’s European visit. After the Amir leaves London he will go to Turkey to visit Mustapha Kemal.
