A national campaign for funda- mentalism is planned by the Wash- ington Collegiate Seminary and Bi- ble Institute, fundamentalist organi- zation at 1316 Vermont avenue, ac- cording to an announcement by Rev. E. L. Eaton, newly elected president of the institution. Rev. Mr. Eaton, who is founder of Asbury College, Wilmore, Ky., pro- poses to carry out a Nation-wide program of education with a view to creating a larger sentiment for fun- damentalism in religion, and to pre- paring young men for the ministry. To do_this he proposes to send out about 150,000 letters within the pres- ent year as personal appeals. Other are to be made personally to ther fundamentalists by fundamen. talists who are in favor of support- ing the program. Depends on Voluntary Aid. No money is being asked for, he states, but voluntary contributions are being depended upon for sup- port. There are no present plans, Rev. Mr. Eaton says, for the conduct o a ol In other cities the Washington Collegiate and Bible Institute of this cit about 80 students are expected to be enrolled for regular courses prepar- ing them for the ministry. On the other hand, he pointed out, it is hoped to so interest fundamentali elsewhere that they will voluntar contribute toward the education of young men studying for the ministry. The idea behind the whole move- ment, Rev. Mr. Eaton explained, is to enable young men lacking means, but who feel the call to the ministry, to obtain the necessary education and to start them on their work lacking financial embarrassment. The latter, he said, is often felt by students who have gone several hun lars in debt to complete their Christian edu cation. As a means of furthering the cause Rev. Mr. Eaton says that 70 funda mentalist leaders throughout the world will be chosen to direct the work of the institute. Believe in Literal Translation. Members of the organization, Rev. Mr. Eaton said, “believe in the literal translation of the Bible from cover to cover.” In other words, it was ex- plained, where the Bible says that the whale swallowed Jonah, the funda- mentalists or the organization believe just that because that is what the Bible says. In line with aiding young men in the study for Christtan service, the in- stitute will seek to arrange for them to get practical experience at preach- ing while learning and to supervise their daily activities so the latter will be in keeping with the life that should be led by young men studying for the ministry, it is stated. The board of trustees of the insti- tute include: Dr. M. E. Miller, this city, H. Troutman, Pittsburgh ‘ward Mitchell of this city, baugh, the city treasurer; guson, dean of the tnstitute and Rev. A. R. Kuldell, president emeritus. Eighty-four students were enrolled in the institute last year. FIVE LOST. IN BLAZE. BERLIN, October 17 (#).—Fire that destroyed the historic Castle of Affing, near Ausburg, took a toll of five lives last evening. Baron Gravenreuths, owner of the noted castle, was enter- taining a hunting party when the fire started. The roof swiftly burned and the tower collupsed. Two bodies were discovered under the ruins of the tower. Several persons were seriously injured. Douglas, “the Little Giant,” which was threatened with sale to pay delinquent taxes, has heen saved by the intervention of city officials. The State claims to own the site, but the title rests with a memorial association. An unpaid assessment of $1,960 was found in a list of judgments, but the office of the corporation counsel gave an opin- ion that the plot was exempt, be- cause it was used for public pur- poses. The unveiling of the memorial was attended by President An- drew Johnson. TODAY'S AMUSEMENTS.
