LIQUOR LOSES 0UT T0 SCENG BEAUTY 85,000 U. S. Autoists Visit Ontario, but Few Seek Rum Permits. By the Associated Press. DETROIT, October 17.—During the Summer months, following repeal of the Ontario temperance act, more than 85,000 automobile tourists from the United States visited interlor Ontario via the Detroit route alone, according to statistics compiled by the Essex County (Windsor) Automobile Club. The club, which has charge of the fssuance of automobile touring per- mits to aliens passing into the interior of the province through Windsor, es- timates “conservatively” that thess tourists spent more than $2,000,000. The automobile tourists are estimated to have numbered than a tenth of the total non-to g aliens who visited Windsor only. Scenic Beauty Attracts. The interesting observation that a majority of the tourists were attracted to the province by its scenic beauties is made by the organ- ization in its report made public last night. “Only 5 per cent of the visitors asked how liquor permits were ob- tained and about 1 per cent actually hought beer or whisky in Windsor before starting out on their trips,”’ the report asserts. “Furthermore, no American tourist was arrested for driving while drunk. No cases were reported for drinking out in the open all imer and not a single case was brought to our at- tention of a tourist being arrested for drunkenness.” As if to convince the skeptical re- parding the superiority of the provin- cial scenic beauty drawing power over the beverage appeal, the report declares: ““There is no question that the new liquor laws enticed to Ontario only a small percent: of thirsty Ameri- cans. But small though that per- centage was in the first place, the Americans who came to get plenty to drink stayed on to enjoy the tem- perate pleasure of fishing, swimming and sightseeing. | Reporters Disappointed. “When the tourist season opened reporters from Chicago, New York, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and other Amer- ican cities swarmed into Windsor to be on hand for the general American debauch. But they went back to their offices without the stories they ex- pected. “To be on the safe side and show itself a good and thoughtful host, the Ontario government opened a liquor permit office across the street from the automobile club’s Windsor office. All the tourist had to Go to get all the liquor he wanted was to step across the street after getting his €0-day tourist permit and stock up. “The government closed up this per- mit office two weeks after it was opened. Not more than 100 Ameri- cans bothered to secure permits at the most convenient place they could be obtained in Ontario.” The statistics showed Ohio, Michi- ®an, Illinois and Kentucky led in the number of automobile tourists, in the order named. There were a number of visitors registered from Alaska. tabulated | iChinese Postal Charges Dig Deeply Into Army Purse By the Associated Press. China’s penalty postal regula- tions are costing the Army a pretty penny. Failure to prepay postage on official mail addressed to American forces in China has resulted in double postage charges by the Chinese and a heavy drain annually upon the funds allotted to the troops stationed in that country. Whife official mail between the United States and Mexico, Canada and Cuba goes through without stamps under reciprocal agree- ments with those countries. mail to China pays a 100 per cent penalty if sent on the same basis. — .
