Washmgton Stock Exchange BONDS DEPRESSED | FINANCIA [ovmew vox BONDS oo mxcmvez] |PRICES UNCHANGED BY REGENT ISSUES More Promising Utility and Foreign Obligations Being Taken Up. A Al A A BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. 8pecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, October 17.—The in- fluence of a 4% per cent renewal rate for call money and the exchange of old fssues for new ones continued to affect prices of honds today. The lat- ter was the most positive factor. There is little doubt that the pur- chasers of many of last Summer's railroad and public utility issues have heen disposing of them recently and taking on the n.ore promising of the public utility and foreign bonds .of: fered. When the syndicates dissolved a few months ago_quite a number of the good 415 and 5 per cent domestic corporation issues broke several points under their original prices; Early in October most of them had advanced to a level well above the’| earlier one, affording profits of from 3 10 6 points to the holders ces Brought Down. Encouragement was given to trade | out of these bonds into others. The effect of this has been to bring down the prices of the former group an average of about a point. This is visible in such issues as Union Pa cific 4135, Rock Island 4135, Mobile & Ohio 4138, Goodyear s, Erie 5s and Chesapeake Corporation 5s. The same conditions obtained in the foreign list, where most of the old issues have become sstagnant or have reacted while a large number of new | bonds have been syndicated. The | Italian municipals were again heavy today and about 2 points below the recent high. South Americans after an active period pendin@ new financ- ing, have again become dull and rather heavy. The French. Relgian and German descriptions are likewise neglected. The only prominent fen- | ture today was the advance in Poland $s above 101 in the adjustment of their price to the new $42,000,000 issue of 7 per cent bonds to be offered at 92 with a yield of 7.80 per cent. Some High Records. A number of new high records were scattered through the day's list. Among them were Missouri Pacific 5s at 102 1-5, Minneapolis, S Paul and Saulte Ste Marie 5155 at 9% represent- ing an advance of 13 points from the Jow of the vear; American Writing paper 6s, Utah Light and Traction 5s and Rima Steel 7s. The local trac- tion bonds all strong in sympathy with traction stocks. Dodge 6s were back to about their previous low level as the preferred stock of the company broke badly. The program of the Treasury re- garding the outstanding $838,000.000 of second liberty 4% per cent bonds is to take these in at 100.1 up to No- vember 15. Although they are selling slightly above this in the market, it would be to the advantage of the hold- er to turn them into the Government at a net price rather than sell them in the open market. Trading Slow., Threatened repetition of last week’s wet weather promises to further affect vegetation, and the manner in which it will be affected will depend entirely upon the question of the appearance of frost. Should there he no damaging frosts the next 10 days or two weeks, ac- cording to growers and dealers, ad- ditional supplies of Fall vegetables may reasonably he expefted. Late corn is doing well, according to reports, and delayed frost should mean largely increased outputs and possibly slightly cheaper prices.
