This splendid victory helped to n{fet the despair caused by Braddock’s defeat and pre- served New York for the English. Johnson was severe- ly wounded and never recovered full health. On the Mohawks' advice he went for treatment to the healing springs at Saratoga, being the first white man to visit that resort. For driving back the French Johnson was made a baronet and received from Parliament a reward of $25,000. He was also appointed a “colonel, agent and sole superintendent” of all the Northern Indian tribes. To the end of his days he retained the love and trust of the natives under his care, and held them true to the English. After the early death of a German set. tler's daughtér, whém he had married, Johnson strengthened his hold on the Iroquols by taking to “HE NEVER DECEI\ ED U virtue of his boundless influence, set out to educate and Christianize his native friends, founding schools and churches for them. For five years following the Battle of Lake George, Sir Willlam was almost constantly engaged in warfare against the French. Then, when peace came, he turned to building up and improving the Mohawk Valley see- tion, where he had secured a large tract of land. Johnstown. N. Y., is named for him. There the manor house he erected (Johnson Hall) is still standing. Turn- ing from war, he henceforth led the life of a rich feudal baron. Johnson never ceased his care ovér the Indians. When the Revolution was at hand certain local “Tories” (John Johnson, Walter Butler and others) sug- gested that the Iroquols be turned loose upon the patriots of the Mohawk Valley to pillage and murder at will. Johnson opposed this horrible plan. Had he lived it might never have been adopted. But on July 11, 1774, in his sixtieth year, he succumbed to a sudden iliness and ‘died. One Indian sachem's words at the HAILED AS A CHIEF willing servants. They made him a sachem (chief) and adopted him as one of their own people. The colonial Governor of New York, quick to note such unwonted friendship, appointed Johnson a colonel of the Six Nations and commissary for Indian affairs. It was necessary to the colony’s very life just then that the right man be placed in such a position, for the French in Canada, with their Indian allies, were planning to swarm over the border into New York and carry southward a merciless campaign of fire and sword. The only real barriers between the colonists and the invaders at that time were the Lroquois. Should these savages join their Canadian brethren, most of New York would be laid waste. The Ircquois wavered. Then it was that William Johnson threw in his mighty influence on the side of New York. Through his efforts the Iroquois remained loyal to the English —and the colony was saved. This so angered the French that they plotted to assassinate Johnson. Care- less of danger, the young Irishman led his Iroquois on a series of daring, murderous raids into Canada. A BLUE-EYED WAR DANCER STOUT, heavily built chief in full war paint and feathers brandished a tomahawk and chanted a tuneless Indian song as he danced into an Iroquois “long house” conference at the head of his braves one day in 1744. That same ‘‘song and dance” did more to save New York State than 5,000 armed men could have accomplished. Beneath his war paint the chief's eyes shone blue, and light hair lay under the feather war bonnet. For, though a sworn sachem of the Iroquois Six Nations, the dancer was Willlam Johnson, an Irish emigrant. As a lad Johnson had fallen in love with a girl his parents would not let him marry. In despair he had thrown over a_promising mercantile career in Great Britain and had come to America. Here, after he had lived for a while in New York City, his uncle, Sir Peter Warren, made him manager of a huge estate in uipment o dress Box 4! tacnifce vrice Gom: no reasonable 1 600 PAST! 1 phone. e 191 reasc be higher — Ses and_d ie hey-makin - Motor Saica ent: prop must leave model cars Tits T8 gm\d opening in for & de Tessen. heauty paric ing and pressi ther informatic TRIBUTOR. a sripped _ manufacturer whose product revolutionized this line seeks sales executive of pr ous success who is finan- elally responsible to handle 18 territor: Installation . ta} minutes.
