42 S LIFE OF LICENSES EXTENDED 16 DAYS Many More Changes in Wave Lengths Are in Pros- pect, Says Commissioner. Extending the life of all broadcast- ing licenses from October 15 to Octo- ber 31, the Federal Radio Commission announces that many more changes in wave lengths are in prospect in the interim. Thousands of listeners throughout the country Will be obliged by the beginning of next month to dial anew for certain sta- tions. A vigordus policy favoring stations with the highest brogram merit is being prosecuted by the commission with the coming of colder weather and clearer reception. The changes. for the most part, it is announced will clear the waves used by thes stations and require others to divide time on shared channels. Twenty Using Same. As many as 20 stations are already using the same channel, and it is the commission’s intention to crowd these | channels even more. If the distance spacing and low power output do not serve to prevent interference, the sta- tions will be advised to arrange their own time divisions. Failure to agree on this will lead to an order from Washington designating the hours to be used by each station. The oxtension of the 60-day licenses was for purposes of convenience. Hereafter all licenses will, be issued as of the lst of alternate months. This is said to he more convenient both for the broadcasters, who must make formal applications for each re- newal, and for the commission. The license renewals will all be for 60 days. Two of the recent changes that have stirred the greatest oppesition against the commission are those whereby Sta- tion KWKH, Shreveport, La., was ordered to reduce its power to 1,000 watts and to share time on 760 Kilo- cycles (394.5 meters) with KMA, Shen- andoah, lowa, and whereby Station KTNT, Muscatine, lowa, was ordered to reduce its power to 1,000 watts for deviating from its assigned frequency of 1,170 kilocycles (256.3 .meters). Federal Criminal Proceedings. The former was charged with ex- ceeding its assigned -power, and. has been cited in Federal criminal pro- ceedings under the radio act. Pend- ing that action, it has applied for a hearing before the commission on an application to go up to 10,000 watts and to have full time’ on'its wave length. This is to be heard this week. Station KTNT was summarily or- dered to reduce from 3,500 to 1,000 watts because the Chicago radio super- visor’s office, ‘on repeated checkups, reported it was straying two to four kilocycles from its wave length, while In New York three stations have com- plained of interference from its signal. Repeated warnings were ignored, ac- cording to a member of the commis- sion. Station KSCJ, Sioux City, is now applyving for the wave length of KTNT. The second of the novel half hours by the Hoover Sentinels, featuring a “‘Quartet of Quartets,” appears to be the leading musical offering tonight of ‘WRC. The program, following the unique plan of presentation, employ- ing brass, string, woodwind and vocal .quartets, will copsist of seven selec- tions. It will be opened with the de- lightful “Dance of the Hours,” by Pon- chielli, taken from the famous opera “La Gioconda.” Thé brass quartet will be the first of the guartets to be heard. MacDowell's r. floral composi- tion, “To a Wild " will be the contribution of the lwind quartet. The vocal quartet, in addition to singing Heywood's “‘Smile,” will, to- gether with the full orchestra, close the half hour with the ular “Down COST MONEY Why spend yours?
