Built on Cottage Plan. “Hillcrest” tructed on the cottage plan, though each cottage has the a ce of an exclusive sub- dence of stone and stucco. Each of the four buildings is ready for occupancy. and all that remains to be done is to complete the outdoor play facilities and sod the spacious lawns that will add so much to the general appearance of the “village” when that is completed. Appleton Clark, jr., the architect, made an inspection trip about the country before drawing the plans for this unique village, which embodies all the advanced ideas of the cottage type. One other buildin: to be to the group soon, an administrative cottage, which will be located in the front and center of the scattered group. Work on this structure has not vet hegun. Hillcrest is situated in close prox- imity to the beautiful grounds of American University and adjoins the grounds of the Mount Vernon Semi- nary. Across its wide frontage on Ne- braska avenue, behind which are the playground facilities, stretches an iron fence, which once was a part of the old Capitol fence, given to the or- phanage by Con; after the Brit- ish burned the Capitol 1814 Occupants Number v'ifty. About 50 children will occupy the handsome cottages next month, small groups of boys and girls occupying three of the cotta while the fourth has been set aside for the new elec- tric laundry and homes for the su- perintendent and janitor and an in- firmary. Until construction of the ad- ministrative building, offices are being maintained temporarily in one of the cottages. The older children will uttend the Tenleytown Public School and the lo- cal high schools, while the little youngsters will have all the advan tages of kindergarten training at Hillcrest. For the older girls there will also be classes in domestic science. In establishing this novel home for the Washington City Orphange, the management has succeeded in oblit- erating every trace of color and at- mosphere which is so generally asso- ciated with orphanages.
