" DUAL KILLING LAD 7O GAMBLING WAR Revenge Blamed for Slaying of Man and Woman in Detroit. By the Associated Pross. DETROIT, Mich., August list of victims of a gamblers which has continued intermittently here for the past 14 months. The bodies of a man and woman, found last night huddled under a blanket in the back of an automobile, were identified as those of Lester A. McCall and his wife, Clara. Both had been shot in the head, McCall once under the right eye, and his wife once under each eye. Revenge Called Motive. Police catalogue McCall as a gam: bler and believe that his death and that of his wife was an act of revenge for a gun battle last Tuesday in which another gambler and an innocent by- stander were shot. Enmity between the gambling fac- tions resulted, the police believe, from a wiretapping conspiracy two years ago in which a Danish baron lost $55,000 in Cuba. The affray Tuesday was staged in a hotel near the downtown district where McCall and his wife had lived until Tuesday morning. Immediately after the shooting a woman and two men were seen running from the hotel. Dashing into the street the woman and one of the men leaped to the; running board of a moving automo- bile. The man threatened the driver with a revolver and ordered him to drive on. Driver Seizes Revolver. After proceeding a short distance, however, the driver noticed blood on the clothing of the man and believing he was injured, wrested the revolver from him. Th couple then jumped from the automobile and disappeared down .an_ alley on foot. Police believe that others engaged in the hotel shooting then traced the couple and slew them. This theory was borne out by the estimate of Dr. Albert French, coroner, that the man and woman had been dead 36 hours or longer when their bodies were found. There ate no real. producers of films in Spain.’ Several firms with high- sounding titles have studios for hire to anybody who wishes to reel of a film. These studios are just glass-roofed sheds erected on vacant lots. The biggest of them is 35 feet long, with 15 arc lamps and a big reflector. The directors usually are the owners of the studios, mest of whom have a very limited acquaintance with acting or _screen .work, and the capitalist who backs a picture thinks from the beginning about his profits and con- tinually suggests economies in pro- duction. The Spanish film which has produced most profits in this country is “Nobleza Baturra,” which cost about $8,500 to shoot and advertise. Other films have cost more, but probably the sum of $14,000 has never been passed. The magimum salary ev . received by a film “star” was 5,000 pesetas for a month's contract, about $1,000, and the artist was called on to perform in a dozen fllms. HORSE DYING OF GRIE.F.
