NDAY MRS JAMES WA_RRE;N and Janes 2nd, of Virginia fre 1 Washingtow. BACHRACH Je., quents visitors Three Conspicuous Events| Marked the Social Calendar During the Week Just Ended presidcnt‘s Dinner to Speal(er 0{ Housc and Army and Navy Reception Coming Next. ’ Important Functions Listed. BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. HILE social events diminished in quantity last week there was certainly nothing lost in quality, and at least three big events stand out noticeably on the season’s program—the congressional reception at the White House, the annual Congressional Club | breakfast and the snappy Billboard ball. The President’s dinner to the | Speaker of the House 1hursday night and the Army and Navy reception the following Thursday yet remain of the season’s list of state functions, which, by no means, prove the limit of White House hospitality, for the President and Mrs. Coolidge receive many guests in the course of the week. A unusual number of members of the House attended the President’s reception in their honor, and more than the usual number of Senators, but still not enough to prove congressional appreciation of a time-honored event especially for them. The Speaker of the House and Mrs. Longworth know the great honor bestowed in holding this reception, and they were | early arrivals and actually opened the receiving line, being the first to meet | the President and Mrs. Coolidge. THIZ Congressional Club improves on its annual breakfast each season, | and, aiter attending the feast at the Willard Hotel Friday, one won- | ders what Mrs. Peter Goelet Gerry, the incoming president, can conceive | that can be more charming for the 1928 event. The flowers, the guests, | the program, the service—in fact, everything, was delightful, and the mem- | bers not only claimed Mrs. Coolidge for their very own out of her busy life for a few hours, but also Mrs. Dawes and other women of official life. | R. HUBERT WORK, Secretary of the Department of the Interior, will entertain the President and Mrs. Coolidge Tuesday, and from the fact that the dinner will be given in the Pan-American Union Building, and Mrs. A. W. Bissell has come on from Chicago to act as hostess for her father, bespeaks a much larger company of guests than any yet enter- tained by a cabinet member this season. There will be a number of out- oi-town guests. i THE Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra will fill the Belasco Theater to- | night with an unusual number of guests, including the Secretary of State and Mrs. Kellogg, the Belgian Ambassador and Baroness de Cartier, the Ambassador of Great Britain and Lady Isabella Howard, Mr. Justice and Mrs. Pierce Butler, the Australian high commissioner, Sir Hugh Deni- son, and Lady Denison, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Merrill and Mrs. E. Van Slyke. UTURE events of importance in the social world include a dinner and a dance at the Italian embassy for which the Ambassador and Nobil Donna Antoinette de Martino have issued cards, the first to be given Thursday evening while the President's dinner to the Speaker is in rogress, and the dance the evening of February 26. The Ambassador of razil will entertain a dinner party the evening of February 19, and the Ambassador of Cuba and Senora de Ferrara, who are now fully settled in the embassy on Sixteenth street, will hold a large reception the evening oi February 24, in celebration of the independence of the island from the Spanish yoke. e . HERE is much of interest in diplomatic changes now, and society re- ceives with delight the announcement of the transfer of Mr. William Phillips from the post at Brussels to the one much nearer home, to the capital of Canada, from which point Mr. and Mrs. Phillips can more {re- quently visit the States. Seldomr has a'change in the diplomatic ranks been accompanied by a more wholesome balm than that carried by the retirement of the Minister of Norway, Mr. Bryn. Today he and Mme. Bryn announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Laura Bryn, to Mr. Francis Winslow, which means that America may still claim this charming girl who has spent the greater part of her life in Washington, Mr. Bryn having been appointed to this post in 1910. HERE is not a more interesting or fitting event on the Winter's social calendar ever than the ball given the night of February 22 to cele- brate the birthday anniversary of the first President and likewise to bene- fit the George Washington University Hospital, which is a big factor to public welfare. Each season the big gymnasium of the university is turned into a different scene, depicting some phase in the life of George Washington at Mount Vernon, and just now the dean of architecture and his students are working out their plans to give the setting for a reception to the Scotch nugfi]mr\’ of the master and mistress of Mount Vernon, the nature of the program giving rise to Scotch music and the picturesque dress of that country by the artists. Ladies Arrange Exhibit Of Garden Photographs Mrs. Elkins, Mrs. John B. Hender- son, Mrs. Theodore W. Noyes, Mrs. Walter R. Tuckerman, Mrs. Charles J. Bell and Mrs. Campbell Forrester are among the ladies who are arrang- ing to have Mr. Harry Wells of Evans- ton, Ill., show his beautiful lumiere photographs of gardens taken in and who are interested in landscape architecture. Mr. Harry Wells will shortly hold an exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery of Art ‘:\'I\)Y(‘l‘s unique pen-point etchings on od.
