By the Associated Pres NEW YORK, February 5—Con- tinued buying sent prices still higher in the cotton market today, May con- tracts selling up to 14.08 and October to 14.50, or 14 to 18 points above yes- terday's closing quotations. Last prices were' within a point or two of the best on active months, the mar- ket closing firm at net advances of 12 to 16 points. The advance was again attributed chiefly to cc\ifln‘ of shorts and com- mission-house buying, stimulated by the bulllsh view of proposed farm relief legiglation, reports of continued steadiness in the Southern spot mar- kets and relterated reports of active demand for cotton goods in Man- chester. ~ The opening was steady at an ad- vance of 2 to 5 points. Some South- ern selling and a good deal of realiz- Ing were absorbed, and the market showed increasing strength during the forenoon on covering or rebuying by recent sellers. Trade buying also was reported on the advance, which ex- tended to 13.86 for margin and 14.28 for July, establishing May and later deliveries at the 14 to 14% cent level. Conflicting opinions continued as to the probable effect of the McNary- Haugen bill should it be passed by Congress, but as suggested by the action of prices most trpders ap- peared to feel that such legislation would have a bullish effect on the im- mediate market, whatever its re- actions in the long run. In some quarters the increased strength and actlvity was ‘attributed less. to pros- pect for legisiation than to the con- tinued steadiness of the Southern spot situation, and reports that ship- pers short of the better grades were finding it difficult to secure their re- quirements. Private cables ‘reported good trade calling and.covering in the Liverpool market and active hmnnui in cotton plece goods for shipment to India. « The amount of cotton on shipboard awaiting clearance at the end of the week ‘was estimated at 168,000 bales against 91,000 at this time last year. NEW YORK, February G.—Exte: sive week end readjustment of specu Iative accounts imparted considerabls frregularity to today's stock mark which was again featured by bulll demonstrations in the so-called me ger rafls. Heaviness of the standard industrials and rails was attributed in some quarters to profit-taking by traders who had bought stocks “for a turn” and in others to distribution by pools and large financial institu- tions. Trading was unusually heavy for a half-holiday session, total sales running close to one and one- half million shares. Wheeling and Lake Erie common which has been the feature of re- cent markets, quieted down consid- erably, less than 2,000 shares chang ing hands with the closing price of 84, representing a net loss of 4 points, High Premium Charged. The unusually high premiums of $3.50 a share was charged for bo: rowing the stock over the week end Directors of the road meet Monday to consider plans for the fssuance of additional common into which the preferred and prior lien stocks may be_converted. Western Maryland common changed hands In enormous volume despite the denlal of reports that the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was buying stock in the open market. | moved up over 5 points to a new high record, at 38%, closing withi a_point of the top. Gulf, Mobile and Northern rose 5 points higher, at 52%, after touching a new recor. top at 54. Wabash common and first preferred, New Haven, Erfe first pre ferred, Pittsburgh and West Vir ginla, Missourl Pacific and- Bangor and Aroostook also reached new high ground. At the close of the market the average of 20 leadinx ralls was at the highest level sinc. ? the war. 0il Group Bullish. Bullish demonstrations also were resumed in the oll group, but mos: of the early gains were substantially reduced or wiped outs Houston was again the lpader, moving up 4l: points to 9114 and then easing to, 90. It was followed into new high ground by Barnsdall “A” and “B and Phillips Petroltum. A. M. Byers, R. H. Macy, General Railway Signal, Jewel Tea Co. and Remington Type- writer also exceeded their previous ' peak prices. Selling pressure was apparent throughout most of the session ir such recent leaders as Baldwin Loco motive, General Motors, U. S. Steel common, American Smelting, Pan- American “B” and International Har vester, all of which closed 1 to 2 points higher. Except for brisk recoveries ai the Span and Norwegian rates, there were few chdnges of interest in the forelgh exchange market. Demand sterling held fairly steady around $4.84% and French francs around 3.93 cents. BAHK SHAR-ES RECOVER.
