Would Aid Britain. Chief objection to basing the quotas on the uational oiigin of immigrants entering the country during the cen- tury ended in 1920 has been that the number of immigrants coming from ? the Irish Kree State, Germany and the Scandinavian countries would be materially decreased. Great Britain and Italy would be the chief gainers in quotas under the national origin, the former's allot ment increasing from 34,007 to 73,039 and the latter's from 3,845 to 6,091 This bsorb practically all of the losses to the other countries. Simon Rubin was held up at the point of a pistol by three negroes in his grocery store. at 1541 C street southeast, last night and his cash register robbed of about $70 and two checks. Rubin was in the store alone about 9:30 o'clock when the men entered and one of them asked for a box of matches, When he started to get them another of the men, drawing a revolver, commanded him to put up his hands. He was held still while the cash register was rifled. The grocer told the police he had more money in the register last night than usual because yesterday was y day and numerous patrons of is store wanted bills changed. He said the robbers were strangers to him. A young white man, fairly well dressed. appeared on upper Twen- tieth street between 3 and 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon in the role of a sneak thief., according to a police report, but so far as the police were able to ascertain he succeeded in obtaining only $3.89. The money was in a pocketbook that was taken from the apartment of Mrs. Frank T. Wall, 2440 Twentieth street. Mrs. Wall left the door of her apart- ment unfastened when she went to use o telephone, she reported to police of the eighth precinct, and when she returned she missed her pocketbook. ‘The man suspected of having com- mitted the theft was seen trying doors of other homes in that neighborhood. Burglars made an unsuccessful at- tempt to gain access to the store of Hyman Fishman, 1100 New Jersey avenue southeast, about 4 o'clock this morning. A glass was cut from a dining room window. Noise made by the burglars trying to force an en- trance to the store atiracted attention, and they were frightened away. An intruder entered the apartment of Marion Herr, 1726 Lanier place, through a side window early last night and stole a string of pearls, two brace- ne gold and one silver—and a mecklace. Police are investigating the theft of three overcoats from 1217 U street night.
