By the Assoclated Pre NEW YORK, February 2.—The $7 000,000 granite mansion of the late “Benator William A. Clark, Montana copper king, is the latest Fifth avenue Jandmark to give way before New York’s architectural renaissance. " Anthony - Campagna, operator and builder, has purchased it for less than $3,000,000; a $7,000,000 12-story co- operative apartment house, the suites of which will sell as high as §350,000, “will be erected on the site. The famous granite pile at Seventy seventh street and Fifth avenue, dub. bed “Clark’s hobby” and “Clark's folly” in prose and poetry, will be razed in a month Built on Elaborate Plans. Plans drawn by the foremost archi tects of the United States and France and revised by Senator Clark we carried out in construction 25 vea ago of an architectural monstrosity containing 59 rooms. Thirty-one baths, four art galleries, a hidden ga rage, 21 servants’ rooms, a swimming pool and several dining rooms are in cluded in the massive structure. Materiale from all parts of the worlc swere used. Granite from a New Ham shire quarry purchased by the Sena tor, more than 200 tons of bronze were made in a New York factory which he purchased, oak came from Sherwood Forest, imported walls and windows from a French chateau and three kinds of marble went into the prop erty. Campagna said he would have given $100,000 more for the property with cut the mansion. More than half the purchase price represents the value of 15,400 square feet of land on which the Clark home stands. Builders consid ered the mansion worthless, except for _smecond-hand material. Outlines of New Building. Apartments in the new building will range in size from 13 rooms and 6 baths to 18 rooms and 8 baths. Each room will cost about $20,000. “Neither king nor emperor ever had a palace simflar to the rk dwell ing,” said tax experts of the mansion that will fall in the steady demolition of town houses of wealth and fashion Last Summer the Astor mansion, at Sixty-fiftth street, was removed; the Phipps house is to go soon; the home that Elbert H, Gary sald he would never allow disturbed has been turned over for apartment development, and the Stuyvesant Fish house, at Sixty- third s¢reet, regarded as a Fifth ave- nue social rendezvous, has paseed. Only a few more relics of the old homes of the avenue remain for the wrecker to claim. ARG Toolin Will Bequests. The will of Mrs. Henrietta B. Past dif- ferences apparently are forgotten be- tween the Hip Sings and On Leongs. Both are content to live in their own lanes of life in peace. War Means Little. The fact that war rages in China has no effect on the local celebration, it seems. Even in China thousands are but an infinitesimal part of the population, and the vaster numbers, according to local Chinese savants, are enjoying their New Year day in streets’ which are laned by lighted multi-colored lanterns to the accom- paniment of incessant fire-cracker ex- plosions. New Year day is something to be taken festively and seriously by tha Chinese. And the local contingent believes in celebrating it properly. Thus. while Pennsylvania_avenue's street cars pass in routine way with their daily crowds to work and home, the Orfent lives in glamour and bril- liance behind the plain fronts of China- town’s homes, ‘Washingtonians friendly with these people will visit them during the com- ing two weeks. They will find, as al- ways, the warmest sort of welcome, always characterized, however, by the reserve which is inherent with the Chinese. The ceremonies are on. Red, the festive color, is rampant. White, the color of mourning, is unseen except on the prayer cards reverently gracing the wall of the temple room. China- town is celebrating. And it will not be over for another two weeks. 60,000 GET TAX BLANKS. Many Property Owners Receive Personal Returns.
