OFFICIALS A'NSWER SUIT. McCarl and Grant Reply to Pay Re- duction Protest. J. R. McCarl, controller genaral of the United States, and Lieut. Col. Ulysses 8. Grant, 3rd, superintendent of public buildings and public parks, yesterday filed an answer to the suit for mandamus recently brought &gainst them in the District Supreme Court by ‘Ernest A. Hind, former major in the Army and now a civil employe of the office of Col. Grant. Mr. Hind alleged that unlawful deduc- tions were being made from his pay @s a civil employe under direction of McCarl. The respondents tell the court that in 1918, while Maji Hind was in France, he was paid twice for a month's salary of $335.85, and a deduc- tion of 20 per cent of his pay was ordered to reimburse the Government, which was later reduced to 10 per oent. The officials say the method of . making deductions from the pay of oivil employes to meet obligations to the Government has been approved by the Court of Claims and by the DUnited States Supreme Court. They ask that the suit be dismissed. DECORATION BODY NAMED. . Army Group Will Decide Honors to Be Awarded.
