By the Associated Pre NEW YORK, oember ~—The | cotton market has been generally steady during the past week, with prices making new high ground for the movement. January contracts, for instance, sold at 12.54 ¥Friday morning, | Or nearly a cent ahove the low level touched “on December 4, and later months showed very similar recoveries { on buying which was attributed partly to the trade, but more largely, perhaps, to covering by recent sellers. Several factors have been discussed 26. D. €. DECEMBER in connection with the advance. The continued absence pressure in the South so br as indlicated by the action ‘of the Southern spot markets, or the volume of hedging here, hes, perhaps, been chiefly responsible for the steadier ruling of prices. Buying on the situation In this respect been promoted by relatively light gin- ning returns, with a growing doubt as to whether ginnings for the season will reach the estimated crop total, and an idea that this season's di&- tribution of American cotton in the world’s markets may be facilitated by relatively steady prices for other growths The report of the Census Bureau showing 16,642,249 bales ginned prior to December 13 was below the fore casts, and was regarded as very light| in comparison with the estimated crop. Last year 92 per cent of the total crop been ginned up to December 18, while the ginnings to that date for the past six years have averaged about 92.8 per cent of the season's output. The ginnings to December 13 this year were calculated at only 83.5 per cent of the estimated crop, leaving a 26, 1926--PART 1. 82 cent: of the vield had been dml,:lr to Dscember 13, and that a similar percedtage this year would thean a crop it excess of the Govern- ment’s estimate. The light ginnings, however,’ comblnwd with the reports of continued unfaworable weather for has | saving late cotton, made a bullish im- pruiwn on sentimant on the average. Some suthorities are reducing their estfimate of the Eaef ,Indlan crop, and the relatively low n‘ico of American low grades has recently been re- flected by reports of fihln‘n«nu and pending shipments to Romba; Pri- vate advices from Alexandria say it is expected that prices will be pegged at 28% for sakel and 154 for uppers by government puchases in the futures market there. $130,000 in Yule Bonuves. EVERYMAN’S INVESTMENTS BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Significance of “High” and “Low.” It is human nature to be interested in records. To set up & new mark in an athletic contest, to do something on a larger scale than ever before, any naoo:npu';.hmnt that can be ex- pressed in ures surpassing any- thing of record in the same line always attracts attention. 8o it is with the security market. If a stock or a bond sells hllhn than it ever did before it at once a’ matter of news. Kven if th n.' record is only for a limited tim the year in which it was embnlhod. it is deemed worthy of notice. Much the same heed 1s paid to record low Quotations. In tables of stock trans- actions there sometimes is a column which gives the record high and the record low of each security for the year. Some financial publications give the same information for the entire time that particular stock has been dealt in, Now these figures are interesting, ut as guides to prospective buyers or wellers they are often misieading, The fact is that the abnormally high, as wall aa the abnormally low, quotations are made under abnormal conditions, not likely to recur except at long in- tervals. These high and low prices may have been touched on sales of only & aln‘lo lot of 100 shares on the case of stocks, or of a single $1,000 Dplece iIn the case of honds. Some ardent speculators for the rise may have put in an order at the height of a “bull” campaign to buy “at the market,” and %0 may have pald a price in excess of anything ever seen before, or in the wsame way, when pessimism was un- restrained and prices were collapsing all arotind, some other speculator may have eold “at the market” and taken Joss than any one else was willing to accept aver before. These records are iInteresting, but they are worthless as indicative ‘what will happen in the future. Kenya Colony, Fast Africa, is be- coming interested in the radio and it is belleved that many of the 6,000 Indiams there may be induced to in. stall recelving sets. Buyers ap pear to have bean impressed by the bearish view of the statistical positior and have been holding off. Producers on the other hand, show little disposi tion to press for sales, and in son. cases are still holding nominally fo 13%, in anticipation of an improved demand after the turn of the year. Tin remained very qulet and thei~ appeared to he a lack of importas consuming interest. Prices were eas: as a result of the lower schedule i London. Lead was in moderate demand and steady, Producers were understood 1o view the outlook as attractive and t|were reported to be accumulating moderate supplies, rather than at tempting to press the market for business, Zinc was agaln steady, although the trade interest generally was moderate Antimony was steadier, with dealers bidding freely for January arrival. n THE YEAR 1926 TO DATE ON THE WASH- INGTON STOCK EXCHANGE.
