SCRAPBOOK BARES STIRRING RECITAL Story of President McKinley’s Assassination and Roose- velt’s Inauguration Revealed. By the Associated Press. BUFFALO. N. Y., The stirring tale of the assa: of President William McKinley and the inauguration of President Theo- dore Roosevelt is unfolded through a collection of newspaper clippings, pho- tographs, records and notes hidden away in a big leather-covered scrap. book in the stately old home here of Ansley Wilcox. Mr. Wilcox plans to turn the collec- tion over some day to & museum or historical society, in order that the true story of almost every interesting incident of those exciting days may e preserved. Some articles have been painstakingly edited by Mr. Wilcox, who witnessed most of the events de- scribed Message From Roosevelt. Few persons have seen the old vol- ume, as it is seldom brought forth from its hiding place in the hom where Roosevelt, as Mr. Wilcox's guest, was inaugurated President and where he held his first cabinet meet- ing. Perhaps the most valuable docu- ment in the collection consists of three sheets of ordinary yvellow paper, on which President Roosevelt scribbled the drafe of his first proclamation as President, on September 14, 1901 In a rough and jagged hand, it be gins: “A great and terrible bereavement has befallen our people. The Presi- December 25— sination 2 WY 7 0 7 Z W Patent dent of the United Stats has been stricken down (here several lines are written, then scratched out), a crime committed not only against our Chief Executive but against every law-abid- ing and liberty-loving citizen of our Nation. A short time before Roosevelt began to write this proclamation he had taken the oath of office in the library of the Wilcox home, in the presence of mem- bers of the McKinley cabinet and a few other persons. The vellow paper was thrown in a scrap basket, but some one thought of salvaging it. and now Mr. Wilcox is proud to possess it. Other mementos of those days in- clude the coat that Roosevelt bor- rowed from Mr. Wilcox for his inau- been given to the The , chairman xecutive committee of the Pan- American Exposition, is in the cus tody of the Roosevelt Memorial Asso- ciation in New York City. THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. ¢, DECEMBER 2 DEPICTS VOCAL CORDS IN ACTION Experiments in Interior of Throat May Revolutionize Theory of Human Speech. By the Associated Press. COLUMBUS, Ohio. December 25.— Photographing of the interior human voice mechanism during mormal speech has been accomplished for the first time at Ohio State University here by Prof. G. Oscar Russell of the university phonetics laboratory, it was revealed today. Prof. Russell declared he is con- vinced, as a result of the first photo graphs, that many previously con- ceived theories regarding the voice will have to be modified, if not revolu tionized. Unlocking of vocal secrets which may be expected to follow, he ved, may be felt in the radio in- telephone, phonograph mak- voice culture, teaching of lan- and teaching denf-mutes to dustr. ing, guages, speak. Evidence is given in the first photographs, Prof. Russell declared, that the hyold bone, at the base of the tongue, and the so-called false vocal cords. contrary to accepted be- aid in producing the vowel that certain theories of volce premises, and that previous theories of what part the vocal cords play and what the function of the vocal cavi- ties is will have to be modified. The photographs were obtained with a full sized camera, linked to a tube about the size of a lead pencil, arranged to conform to the contour of the mouth, and containing mir- rors, lenses and prisms and a light- BM orbrown opera "mf patent mond spike heel.
