In the early days of the Charity ball, then the only one of its kind given in Washington, the board of lady visitors prepared the refresh- ments and frequently actually served the guests in person. The refresh- ments were as a rule chicken salad and sandwiches. It was a point of honor among the ladies of the board to make the most delicious salad and delectable sandwiches. Many of the women now serving on the board of lady visitors inherited the post from their mothers, and their daughters, now ‘“buds” and debutantes of several seasons, are in training to follow in the maternal footsteps. President Arthur set the precedent that the Chief Executive should at- tend.
