December | cotton market showed renewed steadi- ness today on further covering In | preparation for the possibility of com- paratively low ginning returns from the Census Bureau on Monday. Steady Liverpdol cables also were a factor on the advance which carried the price of D . €, January deliveries up to 12.26, or 8 points net higher. January closed at 12.22, the general market closing steady at net advances of 3 to 17 points. The opening was steady at an ad- vance of 3 to 17 points, with Decem- ber, which had been relatively weak, at the close yesterday, returning to nearer its previous relation to other months. The firmer showing of Liv- erpool, accompanied by reports of more encouraging advices from the China cotton goods trade, led to fresh buying here in addition to renewed covering by recent sellers, while there also was a little trade buying of the Spring_months. Southern selling was In small vol- ume and quite readily absorbed around the initial figures, prices work- ing up to 1255 for December and 12.50 for March during the forenoon, or about 8 to 20 points net higher. The advance was checked by realizing at these figures, but the close was within 4 or 5 points of the best. Private cables said the advance in Liverpool had been due to covering, together with Manchester and Bom- DECEMBER 19, 1926—PART 6. bay buying, in anticipation of bullish American ginning figures on Monday. There was nothing in the morning's news to throw any fresh light on the probable show!ng of the census report which 1s scheduled for publication at 10 o'clock on Monday, but yesterday's private report of 15,550,000 bales gin- ned to December 13 appeared to have made a considerable impression on sentiment. There were rumors that some buying orders on limits canceled recently were being reinstated in the market toward the end of this week. The amount of cotton on shipboard awaiting clearance at the end of the week was estimated at 193,000 bales, against 143,000 last year. sida PRICES ON PARIS BOU’ESE PARIS, December 18 (#).—Prices were quiet on the Bourse today. The year which is nearing a close gives eviderice of being the greatest in the history of the automobile in- dustry. The output is ahead of that of 1926—a record yvear—and sales have also shown an Increase, but profits have not been so great in some instances. Price reductions on 3 .| cars early In the year diminished net profits. The biggest gains in pro- duction have been in the truck and passenger bus divisions. Mellon Sees Satisfactory 1927. “Credit throughout the country seems to be ample,” says Secretary Mellon. “An indication of this is the ease with which $16,000,000 has been recently raised through private subseription for marketing corpora- tions to handle the situation arising out of the large cotton crop. Money for investment is plentiful, and it is | most encouraging to note the extent of security investments represented hy the small investor. On the whole, it seems to me our domestic situa- tlon is in good shape, and we can look forward to another satisfactory vear.” Thrift Week in January. NEW YORK, December 18.—New buying of steel during the past week continued quiet, with the exception of some good raflroad orders, and tha Industry as a whole felt the tnflusnce of the approaching holiday season The extra dividend declared by the U. S. Steel Corporation, and reports of some increase {n operations by this concern, as well as optimistic pre dictions _relative to the new vear, were reflected in n very hopeful at- titude on the part of the trade in general. Prices were somewhat Ir regular but on the whole the tons was steady. Pig ifron was inactive but steady. Copper has been quiet. Ruyers for both domestic and export account evidently supplied their more im medfate needs earlier in the month, and a bearish view of the November statistics encouraged procrastination of forward purchases. Somse price shading has been reported and small lots were reported available at con- sesstons toward the end of this week. Producers generally, however, have shown little disposition to press for sales, probably anticipating a re cival of demand after the turn of the it 18 understood that al i d for the first siderable quarter. BALTIMORE December 181 vestment bankers here report a pre fitable year, but not as good as 1925 There were fewer underwritings this vear and this fact caused a big drop in earings. Neither was over-the counter business as large as a_year ago. However, bankers are well sat- istied with results and look forward to 1927 with confidence. There is a tremendous amount of financing in the making. Much of it 1s scheduled for early offering. It will come out at a time when money is abundant, and the expe: ion that the issues will be quickly ab sorbed. At the moment there is scarcity of high-grade bonds, despite the fact that during the year approx- imately seven billion dollars of bonds have been marketed. Some of the new issues were for refunding purposes, but the bulk was sold to provide additional capital. S VOTE ON STOCK ISSUE.
