MRS, WADE HAMPTON ELLIS, . who divides her time between heflfwgmm ho Ribpon Lodge and fer Washingto « White House Is Gladdened By Approach of Christmas, Annual‘Home-Coming’ Day Other Homes in Capital Share l?leasures Incident to Holiday Reunions—Gay Season Is Confidently Anticipated. BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. OY reigns supreme in the White House and in many more permanent homes of the Capital, for this is home-coming time, and while the halls of famous schools will be silent for days to come paternal dwellings will resound with laughter and merriment. Entertain- ments of state for 1926 are but a memory now, and a riot of youth begins | the middle of this week and continues until the New Year hastens the students back to duty. Mr. John Coolidge—just John Coolidge when he | first came to Washington—will arrive at the White House and find a countless number of invitations awaiting him, while long ago cards for dances, teas, lunches and carly dinner parties were received, answered and laid by for their children by fond parents against the rush of the Christ- mas season. ERHAPS the largest and most dist‘nguished group of young folk here on their 10-day or two-week leave will be found at the Christmas night ball for the benefit of the Children's Country Home, where the beaux and belles of the future will join debutantes and gallants of today, young men and matrons, and even some of the more staid members of society who like icoking on this festive scene will occupy boxes. There will be a brief, but merry, Christmas program prepared by committees of younger gir.s just to give the proper Christmas atmosphere, and gay decorations in the season’s colors will obtain. O VE of the most brilliant of the private dances will be that given Thurs- day night, December 30, at Rauscher’s, when Mr. Elmer Jared Bliss of Commonwealth avenue, Boston, will entertain for his daughter, Miss Muriel Bliss, who will at that time, as when she made her debut a few weeks ago, be the guest of her uncle and aunt. Gen, and Mrs. Thomas Q. Ashburn. Col. and Mrs. Arthur O'Brien, who had the novelty of an- nouncing the engagement of the latter's daughter, Miss Allison Roebling, to Baron van der Elast, attache of the Belgian embassy, before she made | her debut, will give a brilliant ball Monday night, December 27, for Miss Roebling. Many dinner parties will precede the ball, Mr. and Mrs. Alex- ander Legare asking guests for the latter’s son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. George Pulver, and Maj. and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant, 3d, will ive a dinner for their daughter, Miss Edith Root Grant, and their niece, princess Ida Cantacuzene, taking them later to Miss Allison’s dance. A NOTHER big dance arranged for Christmas week is that Tuesday night, December 28. when Mr. and Mrs. Frank S. Hight will entertai for their debutante daughter, Miss Barbara Hight, and again spright! young folk will form the greater number of dinner parties for the eve- ning. An arlier event of Tuesday, the 28th, will be the tea dance which Mrs. C. P. Summerall, wife of the chief of staff, U. A., and Mrs. Wil- tiam J. Glasgow will give at Fort Myer, the guests having becn asked to meet Lieut. and Mrs. C. P. Summerall, jr, who are coming from Fort Hoy Undoubtedly a large contingent’ of the debutantes will be there, as the visiting cadets from West Point have been asked. Mr. and Mrs. Copley Amory will give a dance at the Montgomery Country Club the night of December 28 for their debutante daughter, Miss Katherine Amory. Miss Louise Ireland, daughter of Mrs. A. Davis Ireland, will come from New York for the holidays and will give a dinner before the Amory dance. MALL and early is the order of cabinet dinners for the President and Mrs. Coo'idge. and this week they were guests of the Secretary of State and Mrs, Kellogg, arriving on the minute of 8 and leaving at 10| o'clock. The company was quite small, and included the former Ambas- | sador to Italy (and later to France) and Mrs. Henry White, and the former | Minister to Venezuela and Argentina, Mr. John W. Garrett, and Mrs. Garrett. Tt was through the instrumentality of Mr. White that Americans | were made comfortable and finally were provided passage back to America when the Wor'd War broke out, and Mr. Garrett, who is much younger than Mr. White, and a banker and diplomat combined, has had a wide experience. He was 11 times charge d'affaires at The Hague, 7 times at Luxemburg. 3 times at Berlin and 4 times at Rome. His diplomatic sta- tions as s tary were many, and since his retirement to private life he and Mrs. Garrett are constantly sought as guests in Washington.
